I can’t actually remember the last time I was so enthralled by a contemporary feature (admittedly I don’t watch many) and will have to seek out more of Stanley’s work. Really, a director that manages to address dysfunctional relationships, the desire for personal growth and the compatibility of art and porn into a feature has to be respected. Any suggestions as to which other movies are worth a look? [Link]

You're so lucky that it's the first one of his that you watched. What I love about Stanley's characters is that no one is ever 100% in the right or correct. People are a mix of good and bad, just like in real life. "Polarity" was Stanley's first under contract for Wicked Pictures and it seemed like an inordinate amount of time went into it's story and character development. A very thoughtful and intelligent movie, porn or not. My first was "Strangers When We Meet", a melancholic, somewhat imperfect little movie that holds a special place in my heart still. Check out this thread: David Stanley anyone? I started it when I first discovered Stanley and there are some good recommendations in there. Also, this thread mentions a lot of more recent Stanley flicks: superbrief thoughts (by my standards): potpourri I've seen about 24 of his movies, about a fourth of his resume. Most of them Wicked titles. I'm still playing catch up with the Vivid ones. My Top 5 Stanley flicks so far in no particular order (because the order changes all the time): 1. 1000 Words 2. Pretty Girl 3. Melt 4. Carmen Goes South 5. What Are Friends For? I've enjoyed most of the ones I've seen. There are some that are less "Stanley-esque" than others. For example, "Are We In Love?" could have been directed by anyone and I've often wondered if it was some attempt to conform. And I thought that this post was so informative for a Stanley fan that I just had to repost it over here. My favorite MyMovies. wet nurse (because it's about a guy who's afraid to leave his house because he thinks his pants have parties and they do.) prettygirl (because I used to be in love with Ashley Blue and she is the beating heart of that lovely piece) melt (because I love the other worlds that glide ever so gently just a candle flicker away from ours) crescendo:2012 (because it's the most positive movie in the world. it says the end of the world is the best part. 1000 words (because no one says a word as it should be if you understand film grammar. with this i think i did.) viewer discretion (it was an idea i had for years about a TV channel run amok by smut and it reminds me of SCTV.) turnabout (this was my second feature. that it worked was good, considering my first feature didn't.) highway because dasha and dillon met on this part of my bonnie and clyde-inspired, 16mm western/fuckflick mashup) highway part 2 (and fell in love on this part. also, i got to direct an old Romanian woman in a gunfight with a megaphone.) 20 candles (because Kira used to be so beautiful and funny and cool, like she was on this sweet lil' jingle) faraway (again, didn't star a contract girl. made for Vivid. it starred my friend Meghan Mayhem, Myself and Evan Stone.) good things (because it was about 9/11 and it was made in february 2002 and it meant well and delivered a nice note) sweet things (i miss 16mm. i loved shooting in the format of some of my favorite movies. tbd . . .) carmen goes south (because even I think it's funny) mouth (i hate the music, but i love the movie. eric is a genius that few people are fully aware of.) lady of the evening (randy is a comic genius and i miss him) rapture in blue (because it starts with randy getting his taint waxed and screaming over the freeze frame) afterglow (it's so insane. so-so frickin' insane. that was back when i REALLY did what ever I wanted. My Schizopolis) loveless (because I made some of the music for it and because I love Lezley Zen and it's named for an MBV record.) rendezvous (put randy spears in top form with carmen hart at her early career best, then blend pour and chuckle) just like that (it convinced me that francois was the genius that he is. i miss him, too.) harlequin (because it showed how absolutely fucking genius Evan Stone is as a serious actor. I actually bought Polarity at the time of its release but it was David's posts here that prompted me to get on and watch it. I had originally intended to get Crescendo 2012, but having read the relevant threads and the odd review . . . I'm thinking either 1000 words or All About Keri. Although there are NO discussions about porn, art, personal growth or relationships - it's a silent film. There is sound and color during the sex scenes though. The story does have lighter moments and it seems to be more popular with females than males. My guess is because there is a sense of romanticism throughout. "All About Keri" is one that I'm tepid about. I was so excited to see it initially and it certainly has moments but ultimately, I didn't find it as engaging as some of his other movies. Hopefully someone else can chime in and help you with your decision. Or you could just make up your own mind after watching them. Minus the awesome AVN write-up, most guys didn't dig it themselve but recommended it for couples or women. Girl reviewers loved it though. [Link]

Click to expand I have "Duality" here. I haven't watched it yet. I hope it's good, because you gotta see "1000 Words". :) Creme Brulee - I have mixed feelings about this one. You might like it though. There is a lot of discussion in it regarding what makes an artist, how to be an artist, where inspiration comes from. The two leads are creatives - a photographer and a painter. What really makes me like this one is the development of the relationship between Emma (drake) and Zorn (Spears), mentee and mentor. The final b/g between the two is one of my favorites ever. It is the reason I bought it. It's largely in real time and tries to avoid the cliche porn sex scene elements. A bonus on this movie is that there is a Director's Commentary. I don't know if it's the only one that Stanley ever did at Wicked. I'm hoping not because it was inciteful and funny, but I fear it is. He's joined by by the film's two leads. The movie's editor provides some off-mic comments as well. Crescendo: 2012 - I avoided watching this one for awhile. I think something about it taking place in one night and on one set did not appeal to me. I finally watched it last week and liked it quite a bit. I'm sure you've read the reviews and know the story. Bud and Carla start the movie as platonic friends and end it as lovers during an end of the world party that they throw together. There are some funny moments. As for the sex, there is never one huge orgy scene (which is perhaps a reason I was avoiding it as well - group sex scenes rarely work for me). However, the most is a 5-in-one scene, but they don't fuck each other. It's more of b/g/g and and b/g occuring on the same couch. A large part of the score is classical music. It gives a whole new perspective to cocksucking when it's scored by Bach (or whomever). It's worth checking out. What Are Friends For? - I love this movie because it features something you rarely see in an adult film - a happy couple. Typically couples are falling apart because that scenario more easily leads to sex scenes. The story in itself is entertaining, sweet and funny. There aren't any contract girls in this one (Stanley seemed to do that more than other directors at Wicked) and I think this was the first time that Courtney Simpson ever "acted". Jassie is a bit gushy but she's so fucking cute, you forgive her. Alana Evans is great as the hippy lesbo. I like the mix of sex in this movie and there is a lot of it - 3 b/g, a blowjob, a handjob, and a fourway. Hope this helps. I started "Bare Stage" this morning. I'll have to restart it tonight. On the other hand, I enjoyed the hell out of Bare Stage. I recommend that one. Duality gets a C+. Bare Stage scores an A-. BTW, Lezley Zen is a really good actress. I don't know that she got near enough credit for that whilst she was around. Gathering inspiration from ObiBong, I revisited ADM. Hopefully, I found a seller that will ship to Houston because they just took my money for 6 titles. 20 Candles, Adore, Highway, Highway2, Sweet Things and because I liked it so much - Bare Stage. Funny little morsel about a high-strung guy whose pants have parties without him . Voodoo was funny. Savanna was sweet. I laughed out loud several times. The sex was better than the average feature except for the excess of Steven St. Croix's ass. His scene with Savanna was a little heavy on the underneath and from-behind shots. Even as a female viewer, I was man-assed out by the pop. I recommend this one if you're in the mood for something light and just a tad strange. Favorite line - "My whole life is crumbling before me like a vegan fuckin' cookie!!!" - Latin Pop Sensation Bobby Renaldo (Steven St. Croix) Rating - B I also watched Hold Still. Lots of the good kind of strange here. Stanley's admiration for David Lynch is apparent in this one. Sunrise Adams is perfect as Amy, the submissive prisoner to the emotionally masochistic Frank (Trevor Zen). Her sorrowful blue eyes killed me each time that bully ordered her to jerk, blow, or fuck someone - in pretty much the same manner he would order a cheeseburger. Eric Masterson is a sci-fi geek who falls in love with Amy after a Frank-commanded encounter who then communicates with aliens (?!) to free her. Memorable imagery with Sunrise drawing a fruit jam smile on a white-suited man who I am guessing is the physical manifestation of her inner self. I also loved the use of shadow in the Kimberly Kane/Eric Masterson scene. I really dug this one. It gave me something to mull over. Recommended for people who don't mind if their features aren't happy-go-lucky, braindead or normal. :) Rating - B [Link]

I like the feel and mood of Just Like That, it has that classic MGM feel and I love the pop culture references.
