| DAF1740 Member 305 Posts 9/06 | Has anyone checked out the latest re-releases of Water Power? From what people are saying on this forum, it seems there are two versions: one for $10 at DVD Pacific where the shit is cut out, and another at TLA for $20. It's not clear if the one at TLA has brown or not. The review on TLA.com seems to suggest so, but I want to be 100% certain before I shell out $20. Anyone know for sure? [Link] |

I have been putting off watching this movie until it gets released in as full a form as possible, with good pic quality, but it seems like you have to sacrifice something no matter what. Can someone, once and for all, just tell me which version to buy? |

| DAF1740 Member 305 Posts 9/06 | And in Femmes de Sade, do you see Rocky trying to make the shaved prostitute lick herself? Or the three women urinating on him and another leaving a (fake) pile of shit on his chest in the concluding orgy? (I'm just asking because the Alpha Blue release of Femmes de Sade was butchered, and all these scenes were cut, as was some of the sex with Linda Wong.) Thanks! |

| DAF1740 Member 305 Posts 9/06 | I'm just asking because some guy on this forum says that "Unfortunately, Water Power is cut. It's almost hard to tell that it's an enema movie." The Avon Dynasty Box set claims that its version of the "taboo-breaking film dealing with enemas and scat" is the "Completely uncut version." But that's a lot of money to shell out at once. (And the version of "Danielle and Her Family," which is here called "Dark Side of Danielle," is apparently cut to remove the messy DP, according to Backdoorman.) | john lyons Senior Member Co-founder of Vinegar Syndrome 1188 Posts 1/08 | Below is a comparison between the long OOP (though sans-expulsions) VHS and the Alpha France DVD. The VHS ran 85 min whereas the DVD runs 66 min. I originally posted this in the following forum: http://avmaniacs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39437&highlight=waterpower+alpha+france Here is what the VHE tape has that the French AF DVD doesn't. Note that the times are approximate: The opening disclaimer is present in the VHE version while the AF version opens with street shots (10 seconds) Gloria Leonard lists all the specials to Gillis including High Colonic. The French DVD omits this crucial line. (10 seconds) In both versions Gillis then asks for her to repeat the previous special She says "All cultures." Here the French version cuts to Leonard saying that one is bing administered. The VHE version continues after Cultures with Gillis saying no and Leonard asking him is he was interested in a High colonic to which Gillis replies that he does not know what it is. We then return to the French version (13 seconds) Next cut in the French release that is in the VHE version is Eric Edwards line "including disobedience." The French version simply goes from him saying "a wide range of symptoms" to "now the, the key to maintaining...an obedient temperament." The absence of the omitted two words makes the subsequent line meaningless. (3 seconds) Here the cutting gets worse. After Pamela says "Please doctor, I don't need this" the French version cuts to the nurse putting tape on her mouth. What's missing is: Eric Edwards gives a long line beginning with "nonsense Pamela and ending with "people misunderstanding, now would we." He also tells the nurse to gag her which explains why tape is on her mouth. (20 seconds) The French version picks up with Edwards line apologizing for binding Pamela but cuts after "trying." The VHE version finishes his line "you have to hold still for the enema." (3 seconds) where the French version picks up with "oh, I see your eyes widen at the mention of the word enema" which makes no sense since the end of the previous line which mentions enemas has been removed. The film is then OK until Gillis breaks into his neighbor's apartment. All is fine until he actually gets to the shower. He flings it open and grabs the Stewardess. Here the French version cuts to Gillis fucking the Stewardess who is already in her knees on the floor. Here's what's missing that the VHE version has: Gillis holds her and says down, at which she blows him. He threatens to kill her and keeps ranting and talks about how she is evil and how he was falling in love with her. He tells her te get on her knees and confess. She pleads with him and he says she's a toilet. She sucks him off while he continues to rant. He guides her off the toilet and onto the floor and starts fucking her. The French version returns here. (4 minutes) The film is fine up until after the scene in the police station where the French version then cuts to CJ Laing and John Bucco in the car together, CJs first line being "Listen John, it was my choice." This is not an edit but rather a reordering of scenes with some additional editing. The VHE version runs thusly: From the police station we go to Gillis writing in his diary then buying more enema supplies. Then we cut to the sisters walking down the street talking. A creepy man approaches them and they run off. Then it cuts to the dialogue between CJ and John in the car. Then we cut to Jamie walking down the street and seeing the girls go inside. Then back to CJ and John in the car. She offers to invite him over. Then back to Jamie watching the sisters and prowling around their house. Then cut to CJ and John coming home. They talk on the couch. Then cut to Jamie breaking into the sister's house. Cut to the sisters talking on the couch. The begin to fuck as Jamie watches. He approaches them then makes them suck him off. Cut to CJ and John fucking. We cut back to John and CJ fucking. Then we cut to the bathroom scene and the dual enema. Then it's the next day and John is with a Sargent eating at Nathan's. The French Version goes: We go from the police station to CJ/John in the car. We then cut to a very quick chunk of Jamie's diary writing. Then back for a VERY brief return to the car and John/CJ and there is a large chunk of thir argument missing (1 minute 30 seconds). We then cut to them entering CJ's apartment and all is fine until John says "it comes off." at which the film cuts to the sex scene between the two. The remainder of the dialogue beforehand is missing (20 seconds) The sex scene has some small edits totaling (20 seconds) Then we return to Jamie buying enema supplies. Based on the music cues throughout the scene, the re-edit here is not in the print. The music jumps. We then see the sisters walking. They are approached by the old man but run away. All is the same until the go inside. Jamie prowling around the house is missing (45 seconds). Jamie breaks in and watches the sisters have sex and then attacks them. We then cut directly to them being fucked, eliminating the blowjob and some dialogue (aprox. 3.5 minutes). The fucking is also truncated (1 minute). We then cut to the shower scene which is intact. Both versions continue with lunch at Nathan's. In the French version cuts after the Sargent says "move in" and goes abruptly to another of Jamie's diary writings. The VHE version extends this seen as the Sargent continues his speech and discusses the importance of not letting personal thoughts interfere with the case. The first line of Jamie's diary "January 21" is missing (45 seconds). After this all is the same until Gillis sees CJ's badge. The French version omits some of Gillis starring and looking around (15 seconds). Gillis forcing CJ to strip is gone (15 seconds). A great deal of their struggle is cut. (2 minutes). We finally move to the bathroom. All is complete as far as I could tell with the exclusion of the final freeze frame and rape statistics which are absent in the French cut. |

| DAF1740 Member 305 Posts 9/06 | Anyway, I just received the Femmes de Sade/Water Power double feature from Alpha France. Diabolik may still have a copy or two left, so, if you're interested, I highly recommend you get it while you can. (It's PAL region 2, but my Mac has been set up for region 2, so I just watched it on my computer.) At $40 it's a bit steep (for me, anyway), but the picture quality is stellar. And both films are absolute masterpieces. On a side note, does anyone know where the red light district in San Francisco was back in the 70s? I'm trying to figure out what streets/area is shown in Femmes de Sade. (As a New Yowka, I'm pretty familiar with the geography of Water Power.) Thanks again everybody for your input! |

| EddieDingle Member 18 Posts 12/09 | I have a friend that works with the companies, etc. HOWEVER, he said it was just some lame dialogue, nothing was cut that was obscene. It does have shit and brown water and all that. I own that DVD and its a great double feature Edited by - EddieDingle on 12/16/2009 10:13:13 PM |
| john lyons Senior Member Co-founder of Vinegar Syndrome 1188 Posts 1/08 | WATERPOWER has some of the best dialogue Shaun Costello ever wrote and the lines which were removed make the story incomprehensible at times. And also, FYI, the expulsion shots during the secene with the two sisters were OUTTAKES which were re-inserted by the distributor. They weren't in Shaun's original cut of the film. |
| DAF1740 Member 305 Posts 9/06 | So, since the expulsion shots with the sisters were taken from outtakes, were other expulsion shots cut from the version originally released in U.S. cinemas as well? I'm just trying to figure out exactly what someone who went to a theater in 1976 would have seen--would it have been the longer Alpha Blue version, with more dialogue but no expulsions? |
| john lyons Senior Member Co-founder of Vinegar Syndrome 1188 Posts 1/08 | Shaun's original theatrical run roughly 75 min (though is not the ABA version) and quickened the pacing on all the sex scenes. All of the dialogue was kept intact and there were also additional exposition shots which seem to have been lost as they are not in any of the current versions. The closest cut to Shaun's original version would be the 85 min. cut which contains no expulsions (all the expulsions, except for the sisters, were in Shaun's original version). The 85 min cut keeps all the scenes in their correct order and does not eliminate any dialogue. It does, however, include roughly 10 min of sex scene outtakes to pad the running time. |

| EddieDingle Member 18 Posts 12/09 | I will be one of the first to admit porn, not necessarily contemporary porn, but vintage era porn is very artistic and well made. This is a terrific movie, considering Costello's direction, and Jamie Gilles, especially the fact that he wanted to actually go visit the real enema bandit and study him, but Shaun said....uhh we really dont have the funds. With that being said, the movie is extremely comprehensible on the Alpha France DVD. This is a dirty grimy film. It's a good character study, but not necessarily porn with classy style. |
| john lyons Senior Member Co-founder of Vinegar Syndrome 1188 Posts 1/08 | Shaun and I have talked about the AF release a bunch of times and he's pretty upset at how they butchered his film. Bare in mind, not only did they randomly remove large sections of dialogue, including most of Gloria Leonard's hilariously listing the "specials," and Eric Edwards giving a history of enemas, but scenes are reedited and reordered so that they make no sense, such as one of Jamie's great diary readings beginning, then randomly breaking mid sentence, only to continue and finish 5 minutes later. Sure, the movie is comprehensible enough on the AF DVD, but it's an insult to the way Shaun originally cut the film. Shaun was always very proud of how well edited it was, despite the budget, and this DVD is just a clumsy hodge-podge, chopped up mess. Eddie, if you haven't seen the 85 min. version, I'd strongly encourage you to check it out, if only so you can see just how well made of a film it is, despite its small budget. |
| Gore Gore Girl Doctor of the Erotic Arts 7238 Posts 1/09 | There was part of the version I saw that made no sense at all - how CJ Laing found the Enema Bandit. She seemed to just walk up to him in the street, even though they didn't know who he was. That was a big problem for me. Is this a result of the butchered edit? If so, how did they find out it was him in the correct cut? |
