Hey I'm upgrading my canon t2i, and I am trying to decide on a suitable lens for small adult movie production. It's seemingly difficult to decide so I was hoping someone could advise me on a nice lens reasonably priced, perhaps someone using this type of camera range would be most applicable, although anything helps!

^ are you looking to shoot video or stills? The typical issues shooting porn is not enough light and tight spaces. I'd suggest looking for a good quality lens with reasonably wide angle and small f-stop to capture more action and let lots of light in.
Unless you're very skilled with the camera and absolutely have to have follow focus or shallow DOF, shooting video with a DSLR is more trouble than it's worth. There's reasons why someone invented video cameras.

Thanks for your input. I am very happy with the quality of my dlsr and will continue to use it. As for the lens I'm looking at a tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and it is very intriguing. Once again thanks for the reply and all opinions/information is welcome and helpful.

^ fortunately shooting porn rarely involves shooting buildings.....particularly when shooting indoors.

^ Unfortunately, barrel distortion looks even worse when applied to the human figure than it does when applied to architecture. It does the same thing no matter what your subject is. It's unbelievably irritating.
And when shooting indoors, it's also very obvious because you can frequently see door frames and other straight lines in the background. Also, you frequently can see sofas, chairs and all sorts of other things that look very wrong. Everything in the image appears to be bulging out towards the camera. Including the ladies.

If you shoot stills, you can post some of the distortion out with a good photo editor. Dunno about video.
Of course that requires time and effort (=expense), which is why you won't see it in most porn.

Unless you're shooting in a very large room, the realities of porn is you'll need to use a wide angle lens rather than the telephoto used for most stills. I suggest anyone that thinks otherwise try shooting some porn and see what the experience is like.....particularly in a typical bedroom. Your butt's against the wall and you're only seeing part of the action in the viewfinder. Try it.

I know it takes some extra effort but severely distorted porn is practically worthless.
Virtually all gonzo is shot with really wide lenses. Even when they're shooting in very large, open spaces. It's just laziness and some kind of inexplicable obsession with the way the wide lens makes things look. I don't know why but they seem to think it looks good.
The one thing it does do is makes a woman's ass look bigger in a certain way. But it actually looks like distortion so the effect is pointless if you know what you're looking at. And besides, I don't want their asses to look bigger than they are. I want them to look like they look in real life. Or as close as possible. Most of the time, the guys who shoot that stuff are shooting girls who have big butts anyway so it's completely unnecessary. Instead of a sexy video about big butts, it's a cartoon.

^what porn do you watch that's not shot with wide angle lens? What glass are they using? Telephoto? Really??
If you look at the camera setup for a still shoot like Playboy centerfolds, you'll see the camera a long way away from the model. Twistys and others do the same thing. It gives them the shallow DOF they want too. I don't think they do the same thing when they shoot video.
Hand held video cameras are difficult to keep steady with a long lens and I've never seen a steadicam used in porn. Maybe a tripod for one camera. The OP was planning to shoot "small adult movie production" content with a t2i DSLR. Good luck doing that with a telephoto lens. Even a 50 isn't going to give you the FOV you'll need.

Here's a great video on lens selection. It's specific to weddings, but you can easily translate it to porn.
Lens Choice for Canon DSLR
The section about filming the groom and bride getting ready relates well to what you'll be filming in a porn shoot. Hope that helps.

That was my point. Virtually all porn is shot with what looks to be the next worst thing to a fisheye lens. Even if they need to use wide angle, they don't need fisheye. I can look out my peephole on my front door and what I see looks exactly like at least 30% of all porn I've seen in the last ten years. You're telling me an ultra wide (Near fisheye) lens is really necessary?
Well, maybe that's a problem? I don't know about most people but when I watch porn I want to see women who look more or less like they would if I was watching them IRL. Distortion is a big problem.
They spend all this money to make a porn vid and can't be bothered to use a tripod or a Steadicam and put in the extra effort to get the angles and shots they need? What's the point of HD video if it doesn't look right?
I think this has more to do with the fact that porn makers are stuck in a rut using the same angles over and over than it does with it being impossible.
I've never shot a porn video. You're right. I can't know for a fact. But I have used a video camera to shoot various things (including sex). In a pinch, if I had the money, I think I could probably easily shoot some sex without bolting a fishbowl on the front of the camera.

No. I'm just a porn viewer. I don't spend that kind of money on tech I'd never use.

I had a T2i for a year and a half before it died (for the second time). The first time the circuitry got fried and Canon replaced it but I was without it for a month. The second time it had just went out of warranty so rather than spend money to fix a camera that I wanted to upgrade from anyways I just got a Canon 5D Mk II. With T2i's since they have a crop sensor, you have to buy really wide lenses to make up for that fact.
That Tokina is a sick lens and I mean sick in an awesome way. My buddy in Austin that does cinematography has one for his 7D (same size sensor) and it's a great wide angle lens. There some barrel distortion and vignetting due to filters at 11m or so but from 12-16mm it's very nice. If you're doing POV stuff especially that would work out nicely. What'd you end up getting Mr_slate?
I just got a Canon 24mm f/2.8 for my 5D and it's WIDE since it's a full frame sensor. All i had other than that was a Canon 50mm f/1.4 that was a nice medium lens in terms of focal length. I HAD the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for my T2i and that was nice but when you put in the crop factor that translates to a 44.8-120mm lens on a full frame camera. On the 5D, the 28mm seemed super wide, but that's how that focal length is supposed to look. I sold that lens to B&H since it was just too soft for photos when it was wide open at f/2.8, but DSLR video is compressed to a 2 megapixel image rather than a full 21 megapixel RAW image of a photo, so that softness goes away a little with the compression.
Let me know what lens you got though and if you have any questions. I do photography and filming on DSLRs and I'm more than happy to help out if i can since this is what I do with the majority of my time. Do you have any examples of your work with your T2i? I'd love seeing it. I've toyed around with the idea of shooting adult videos on mine but don't have anyone to shoot since the area I live in sucks. I've shot a shit ton of art nudes on my T2i and 5D though. Just nothing overly sexual which is something i want to gravitate towards. Again though, my area sucks. haha. Cool thread!

Canon just released the T4i which would be a better choice than the T2i. You can even zoom while shooting video (I don't recommend doing this generally).

Zooming while filming on DSLRs looks bad generally. Unless you meant the digital zoom they do that goes 3x and 1 hex ? I know the T3i did that but I honestly haven't looked too much into the T*i's since my T2i broke. They're decent, but its better to invest in a 7D or 5D if you're wanting a better end product and all.
