Reasons why DVDs were a waste of money for me:

-Back when I bought DVDs (2002-2014), the average price for a new (unused) DVD was always $20+. So, considering how often I bought DVDs back then, I surely spent hundreds of dollars annually on them. On the other hand, I now buy 30-day memberships to my favorite porn sites, always at a great discounted price (usually $9.95 per month). So, for a low price now, I can have access to EVERYTHING from a particular site/studio. Oh, and having full access to sites gives me access to full photo galleries, which are important to me; whereas a DVD photo gallery only consists of a couple pics. Finally (on this point), now that I'm porn site memberships-only, I estimate that my annual "porn costs" are only around $300, definitely a lot less than my DVD-buying days.

-DVDs only consist of a couple scenes and, more often than not, I did not like every scene on a given DVD. Worse yet, you used to get 5 (or 6) scenes on a DVD years ago, but it it appears that all the major studios only do 4 scenes per DVD now. Of course, despite the reduction in scenes, DVDs are just as expensive now as they were "back in the day".

-Porn DVDs have no sentimental value to me. It didn't take long for me to no longer have interest in a DVD; after just a couple weeks or so, I stopped watching most DVDs. To add to that, I'm not one who goes back to watch "classic" scenes; when I watch porn, I just want to see the "latest and greatest", very rarely am I in the mood to watch scenes from "back in the day".

-The visual quality of my old porn DVDs is bad compared to the 1080p scenes I stream today.

-Being able to watch scenes on my iPad instantly is so much more convenient for me than watching DVDs.

I've no hard media i.e. DVDs but I've a hard drive of around 6TB of the stuff! Love collecting videos and images and having them on hand ;). Problem is two things :-

1. Trying to Keep up to date with the actresses you like and not miss anything
2. Organising 6TB worth of porn.

If you are familiar with these two issues then I suggest a really cool software called Pornspective. Solves both of those issues with ease and has lots more packing in terms of features. Best porn app out there as far as I'm concerned and I've tried lots!

I am a porn collector. I collect the highest-quality version of favorite scenes.

For newer scenes, this means downloads. For way older scenes, this means collecting DVDs.

From 2000-2005, most web scenes were only 240p. Even though the DVD version is only 480p, when you first see an old favorite scene at DVD resolution, it is like a magical experience, and your model tends to look way hotter than you could have imagined.

Around 2006 or so, web scenes were becoming 480p and beyond, so now I rarely buy DVDs from beyond 2006, unless there is something else on the DVD I like. Maybe a special BTS scene or very good cover art.

I still like the DVD physical disk itself, the idea of true ownership.

This is one reason I will store a favorite 4K scene on a dual-layer DVD (8.5 GB).

I definitely still download and collect all the content that I subscribe to (excluding OnlyFans because there is no download capability). I'll keep doing that for the foreseeable future mainly for two reasons.

1) Data usage - Given that more and more videos are coming in at 1-3 GB file sizes because of 1080p & 4k, I don't love the idea of burning data every time I want to watch a specific scene. Granted, my monthly data cap is 1.2TB so it's unlikely I'd hit it unless I was going on a pretty serious marathon watch. But it just makes a lot more sense for me to download and save any video I like so that I can watch it without wondering how much of my data I'm burning after I've surfed through an archive.

2) Wanting to have permanent access - That's the biggest reason for me. Yes most data is moving to the cloud and that's all well and good. But, if a site I'm subscribing to goes out of business or shuts down randomly then I've lost all access to my favorite content without any real avenue for being able to see it again. This way, anything I've really enjoyed I will have saved on one of my external drives without having to worry about it one day just vanishing.

About data caps, get the business plan, more money but increased speeds and no caps.
The hard drive is a physical disc/drive. What you're feeling is nostalgia, a ssd is 100% better than DVD in every way. They won't be missed.

Be well

My stamps are in stamp albums and my DVDs are in tramp albums.

Clearly ssd's outperform DVDs and hold tons more, but I like the aesthetic experience of a DVD having attractive models on the top of the disc. No way can I leaf through an ssd album and be enjoying it.

You are right, there is a nostalgia component, but the chief thing is the beauty of a DVD, literally inside and out! I find the 480p resolution still looking good in most cases.

I also like to have smaller data portions. If a DVD fails, I have lost maybe 4-8 GB; if an ssd fails, yikes.

I do have a few 100 GB Blu-Rays that I have made of my favorite stars' works, which is a good trade-off.

It takes time to copy 70 or 80 DVD scenes to a hard drive first, before making the Blu-Ray, but it is a fun project.

I also make use of the M-Disc versions of Blu-Rays, not so that the data lasts a thousand years, but because they are also much more resistant to physical damage.

Also, if you have precious porn on a DVD or Blu-Ray, used as a write-once, read-only format, your data won't be vulnerable to any malware when you access it from a computer.

I agree with a previous poster that I can't believe porn DVDs are still a thing in 2021. For me, I want to have a quick access to my porn and DVDs are the perfect opposite of that. The only thing I miss from DVDs is some of them had multi-angles back at the time (not enough) and even those DVDs now downloadable doesn't include the other angles they had on the physical DVD itself.

As for download, I'll always prefer to have my favorites scenes on files. Its easier to access, no need to always log in online to see it and its permanent. In my porn consumption, I have the mentality of "download now, see later" attitude. If a scene seems good when I stream it, I'll just download it and will delete if needed later. For me its important to have a permanent offline collection in hand if I lose membership of a particular website, if I don't want to search for new stuff and just want to revisit my own collection or simply if I don't have online access.

I have 3TB of porn on an external HDD, and I also put my absolute favorites on my phone and tablet too so I always have some porn on the go 🤣

^ I have still been collecting DVDs, but generally only those up to about 2005, which at the time was when most web scene resolutions were less than DVD resolution. Even a web scene at 480p was often still not as high a quality as the DVD version at 480p.

Downloading VODs is great when you cannot find an old DVD, such as at hotmovies or adultempire, but very often these sites do not include the bonus scenes. In that case a DVD is probably your best bet for completeness.

It is hard to fathom wanting a recently produced DVD if visual quality is your chief interest.

Maybe if the whole DVD has your favorite star, but I usually buy a DVD for the one scene with her in it.

I definitely agree that you should grab what you can when you can.

There have been some trees in my neighborhood that I was going to take some pictures of "someday" and then one day you are outside and find a given tree has been cut down for no obvious reason.

Good explanations. For me, porn DVDs do not have a sentimental value, but my favorite stars themselves do.

I am "attached" to them and their scenes. I enjoy this "action at a distance," the fantasy.

If a star paid me a visit, I am more likely to thank her for enriching my life than jump her bones (initially).

I do still collect older DVDs (up to about 2005) because their scenes have a higher resolution than the old 240p web versions of that time period.

I particularly enjoy trying to get "the set" of a retired star's DVDs, if she retired before 2007.

Something like collecting old baseball cards. I enjoy the hunt for a rare DVD.

Following-up on my earlier comment: Another reason it's still advantageous to download and save content to a local drive is the growing tendency of MindGeek to randomly pull entire chunks of their catalogue out of their scene archive. Initially it seemed to be isolated to Brazzers, where they had stripped the vast majority of their pre-2010 scenes completely out. But now it's spread to Reality Kings, Digital Playground, and the other MindGeek-owned sites. Factoring that in, if you're a big consumer of content there's really no good reason not to have one or two external drives on-hand so you can save all of your favorite content. Otherwise you risk having them randomly deleted with essentially no recourse.

Yes. We need to think of a given porn scene as ephemeral.

What is valuable to us may not be valuable to them.

Save offline what you like, and don't expect it to last online for long.

When streaming videos play as smoothly as downloads, and takes milliseconds to buffer or load, and the online players offer the same a/v options as VLC-then, and only then, will I consider, maybe, possibly watching streaming porn more often.

Streaming interfaces suck. There, I said it.

I'm a big fan of 90s-2010ish porn and the fact is the quality of streaming/downloads for these films is almost always awful, so if possible and not too expensive I will get the DVDs. Also there's a lot of Euro porn I like that is easier to get on DVD than online. For US new porn, sometimes I'll get DVDs if I'm interested in the star or the type of content. Yeah, I know I can sign up online and get access to more content for a better value, but sometimes I can't be bothered with signing up, downloading and then cancelling, so it's just easier for me to get a $10 DVD to check out.

Definitely. I download and add my favorites (about 30TB of quality 1080p/4K) to my Plex server so I can stream it to my phone anywhere I am (1000/1000 fiber connection). This way a sysadmin won't be snooping pornsite dns requests from my device on their WiFi. Cause I like to watch porn on the toilet at work sometimes. When I'm horny I just need to blow off some steam wherever I am else I'm just thinking about sex all the time.

Hi AcidRain,
I am similar in viewpoint. I like especially 2000-2005.
Some 240p web scenes ended up on DVDs as remarkably better-looking 480p's.

Which sites or content are you guys collecting?

For me it's mostly the stuff VMG creates. I'm especially a big fan of Deeper, that stuff is just art.
I also like In the crack especially when they go to exotic outdoor locations for a shoot. All I need is a beautiful girl flashing her ladyparts.
And I collect vintage porn that is remastered on blu-ray.

1080p is really the minimum for me. We're living in a golden era of porn with 4K video and remastered classics.

Hi Muse!
Thanks for posting. I generally collect a favorite pornstar's DVDs from about 2000-2005, when the DVDs topped the web versions of her scenes in quality. So I do not go by site, but by the content, which is star-based.

To me it is fun to use the Web to search all over the world for the hardest-to-find DVDs. It is a bit like when kids used to collect baseball cards and could hardly wait to "Get The Set."

If a star was still active beyond 2005, when web scenes often became higher quality than the DVD versions, then "The Set" is the complete collection of all of her scenes at the best quality. Then I will commonly skip the corresponding DVDs and download the web scenes instead. I have even bought a few master tapes.

It can be an expensive hobby. So I only collect a small number of stars, including Sophie Strauss, Samantha Stylle, Julie Robbins, and Bella-Marie Wolfe.

The searches themselves can be interesting in that some stars are on DVDs, and yet their names are not mentioned, or their picture is not shown on the artwork. For instance, Sophie Strauss is in several DreamGirls DVDs, some of which do not include even her simple name Sophie. Julie Robbins was in a few DVDs as a bonus scene only. Again, the details regarding bonus scenes are often not presented on the covers. Another star I collect is Makayla Cox. She was initially known as Kitty. So looking up alternative names can be fruitful, too. You need to do some extra research and try to really know your stuff!

One time I was trying to get a DVD with Samantha Stylle called Bound by Blood, produced by the studio Extreme Associates. Someone on ebay, back when ebay was also a porn marketplace, was offering a huge collection of unopened older DVDs from that studio. I found the DVD Face Down, Ass Up 2, which also featured Samantha. That was a hard one to get. So I thought there was a chance that Bound by Blood might also be available. But it did not show up in the Search Results. So I went through the whole collection of the seller at ebay, and sure enough the DVD was there, and listed as Bound Blood. It turns out that the short word "by" was missing, probably because it is a small word on the title page, and the seller did not notice it. So even working with the idea of missing words can be used to find some DVDs.

Bound_by_Blood.jpgAnother star I collect is Isabella Stanza. I was at LuckyStarDVD.com, and fortunately they had a very hard to find DVD called I Survived a Rodney Blast 3. Isabella's name was misspelled as Isabella Stanze in the LuckyStar listing. I think this otherwise impossible-to-find (at the time) DVD, may have still been available at the site because a search using "Isabella Stanza" would not be as likely to list that DVD.

So this is kind of like trying to be the Columbo of Porn!

Skimmed this thread so someone may have made this point already, but so far, digital formats and how store them are very unstable and far more costly long term than physical media.

No argument for me on that point, but the question posed is 'do people still download and collect porn?' Based on the content of this thread, the answer is yes (at least for some--likely the type of people would sign up for a forum like this).

I'm kind of surprised no one pushed back on the assertion physical media is cheaper and more stable.

Yes, and going strong. I download a ton of porn, and I organize and save everything that fits my collection. Moving over to 18 Tb drives. I just bought nine of them so that I can stay backed up in triplicate.

Thinking of what to do with my older collection of 4-8 Tb drives totaling over 100 Tb. I could keep them as additional backups, or mine a storage coin. None are good investments in my opinion, but since I already have the storage capacity, they would be a way to recover some cost.

I used to collect DVDs, mainly Blowjob, Handjob, and Cumshot movies. I also collected every dvd from my all time favorite studio VCA Pictures. However years ago I had a serious health crisis and I didn't know if I would survive, so I threw away my whole collection so my family would not find it. These days I just collect blowjob and handjob pictures on a hard drive.

I download, and sometimes I make shorter edits, because today's porn is often too long and repetitive for me. (I suspect it's made with the FF button in mind, but I enjoy editing, so I sometimes do the FF ahead of time.)

Maybe it's a generation thing, I'm 50yo and hence grew up in a time with a unreliable and slow internet, so I still download and collect to this day = I've never fapped to something directly online, only to stuff on my harddrive(s).

Also storage space is so big and cheap nowadays, just recently I bought a 12TB harddrive, that's years of collecting pics and vidoes until that one is full, aided by the fact that I'm a picky downloader and that I prefer pics over videos.

100% Yes, You never know when something will go down. For example, mc-nudes.com just totally went offline suddenly.
How will you enjoy that perfectly good content if the rights holders don't release it somewhere else? (and probably for way more money if they do).

It also makes it easier to enjoy whatever i want to enjoy in any given moment in high res without buffering etc. With HD and beyond, the storage requirements continue to go up, but I've migrated to cloud storage.
