I can promise you that there is not a single girl in this industry that will retire rich. They may retire from the business but only a handful of the smart ones have put any money away at all. Not that I have planned for my retirement - the IRS gets all of my disposable income. I'm just hoping to die of liver failure before the bottom completely falls out of this business.

No they either go off to the land of escorting and burnout, then they return as milfs after working as prostitutes because getting worked all day by people ages them.
I think that any girl that saves enough to pay for most if not all of her secondary education, stays away from hard drugs, has more money in the bank than when she started, grown as a person and had some fun has won in this industry. This is 100% possible for every girl but maybe 30-40% likely to happen.

Porn seems like it would be a pretty good part time job. Work a regular job, go do a few porn scenes for additional income. Save up and invest to grow your money.

Unless that full time job is a dancer or self employed I think being a part-time pornstar when you have a main job would be very hard to pull off. The second your employer finds out their employee is in porn there will probably be problems.
there is a distinction to be made though. athletes and actors make *far* more than a porn star could hope to. and not only that, but they may reasonably expect to have continued income in the future. porn stars should be aware that all their serious earning will be done in a short window. people with average salaries will never have enough money at once to turn into the "endowment" type thing im talking about.

It might come as a surprise but I agree with those percentages. In fact I think the pornstars that leave the industry with a substantial nest egg are probably closer to 1% (or less) of those who do more than a few scenes. Too leave with a big nest egg almost all of the following have to happen. MAKE MONEY 1)A sustained career lasting more than five years and develop a reputation for reliability. 2)Being paid at the top rate available to the top ten or twenty performers for most of that time. 3)Monetize your porn stardom through feature dancing, webcams and high-rate escorting. 4)Work really hard to build your brand through social media like Twitter, radio (conventional, satellite and web based) conventions, appearances at stores, nightclubs, bike rallies, etc. 5)Monetize your brand through endorsements, paid tweets, appearance fees, etc. Save Money 6)Save and invest the majority of your earnings. 7)Avoid paying for things as much as possible - wish lists, vacations, free dinners and drinks, etc. Don't Lose Money 8)Don't become a raging drug addict or alcoholic. 9)Don't get ripped off by managers, accountants, suitcase pimps, etc. 10)Don't try and avoid paying too much tax through hiding to much income and dubious tax writ-offs. A tax audit can easily destroy any nest egg. A performer who manages to do this can leave the business with the potential for financial security but as in the full economy it is the 1% that will make it while the 99% of pornstars leave the business with not much more finacial security then they entered it.
Sounds reasonable, although I don't know how ideal it would be. Well given the environment today, I'm not sure it not happening already, probably not by design though. Porn seems to a full-time job mostly though, well at least until you get established.
Mike Quasar: What about Jenna Jameson? Also, I'd suspect that Lisa Ann will be well off by the time she leaves the industry. Both of these women seem to have a head for business.

I'm studying a module on personal finance at the moment and I would argue that it will surely depend on how their income and expenditure line up on a graph and how well they budget and save for the future :)
^this is true, but the OP is asking, "Do the top Pornstars make enough to retire rich?. If they do a ridiculous amount(1000+) of top dollar($2000+) scenes, best case scenario, they leave industry with up to a few million. I'm sure everybody has their own interpretation of what it means to be rich, but I'm assuming most people think it's a lot more than 2, 3, 4, or even 5 - 10 million. In my opinion, a rich person can buy a 10 million dollar house, or a multi-million dollar car if they wanted to. Pornstars probably make enough to live like a rich person for a short period of time, but retiring that young, there is no way they could even have a chance to become rich from only doing porn. It has to be something other than porn that gets them to that status.
I don't see much of a difference except for the amount of income. Athletes, actors, rockstars make far more money in many cases for a far longer period of time in most cases and yet many of them end up broke. If those people can end up broke when they have accountants and advisors working for them and giving them advice then young female pornstars not ending up rich when they retire shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Athletes and most actors and rockers/rappers/singers have a "shelf life" just like a pornstar. Most people tend to adjust their lifestyle to the amount of money they make and most of those people never feel like they make enough. Whatever most people make they feel like if they just made more it would be so much better but it wouldn't because they'd just increase their spending to match their income.

Ya know, pornchicks -- during their careers, which may not last all that long -- are earning more money than your typical 18-to-30-year-old female does. If they don't let it all trickle through their fingers, I'm seeing a girl that is ahead of the game -- not someone living in fear that they won't retire "rich." The net worth of the average American is only $37,000. Many people have a net worth of zero. A lot of pornchicks may put themselves through school and/or build a nest-egg from which to pursue other potential money making opportunities, due to the higher-paying employment they have had in the porn industry. Absolutely beats flipping burgers, or any of the other part-time minimum-wage no-benefit dead-end opportunities out there. So, what is all the hand-wringing about, really?

^ If a girl is pretty enough, smart and willing to put in the work she can make a very good living and depending on the girl she could retire early in life and be well off ("rich" is subjective). Most of the other jobs mentioned connected with porn actually pay more than the actual porn. So if we go by the actual topic/question asked of the thread I would think the answer would be "Yes" the top pornstars probably make enough to retire rich. Have the top pornstars of the past and will the current top girls retire "rich"...I'd say most of them probably won't. But I'd guess most of them will be in good financial shape when they do retire and you probably won't here about the being broke a few years down the road. That's the top girls. With the second and third tier girls I'm guessing it could easily go either way.
He does a decent amount of cameo work and work as an MC,etc. If he was wise with investments over the past few decades, he may have socked away a bit. I just saw him in a "My Darkest Days" video holding a goat. He does his fair share of "mainstream" work as it were
^ If Ron Jeremy is actually making a lot of money then Ron has a lot of money. I don't know if things have changed but Ron is/was well known for not spending his money. For years he was drving an old beat up car, he lived in a cheap apartment and it's been said he never pays for a meal.
If you make $300 a week but spend 500 then you're basically headed for disaster. If you make 3000 a week but spend 5000 it's not much different. While it's almost impossible to blame someone for not getting by on minimum wage it is amazing to see someone earning several thousand dollars a week and not having enough cash left to fill up their car (if they even own one). I read several commentators speculation on how much so and so performer earns per scene or during their career but how much money you make and how much you have are different things. I personally have never been the highest paid performer and have never shot the most scenes. I can't afford to retire from the money I made so far but I'm pretty comfortable. I have had health insurance for the last 8 years, I own a house, a car, I can afford to go to school full time, I am able to buy all my text books, I have an IRA and enough savings to be able to live for a while without working. Even though I generally get upset about tuition raises it's more out of general considerations than personal financial concerns. To be honest it doesn't matter to me if I have to pay more for school but I know that many of my class mates can't return the next semeste or have to take less classes r if it only goes up slightly because they can't afford it. I think that's more than what the average person can claim. Then again I don't drive a Ferrari and I don't live in Beverly Hills. Porn can get you a good, very above average income without investment but it only lasts for a while. If you take it as a stepping stone it's great but if you expect to work a few years and then think you never have to get off your couch again, then it's unreasonable.

If so, that's pretty impressive. You should get one of those Mexican wrought-iron fence makers to make you a front gate that has lettering spelling out "THE HOUSE THAT ASS BOUGHT" in German.
I know a porn star/escort who I think will retire comfortable. I've always been impressed with her, not because she's a porn star who is responsible, but just a young person who is responsible and is thinking about the future. She is not a big name in the industry and doesn't do a lot of movies, she is known for her deep throat abilities and tends to stick to that genre. She does work quite a bit as an escort though. That's how I met her. After a few times we kind of struck up a friendship and we stopped "dating". I'm not getting it for free we just kind of became friends. She has two children and is a wonderful mother. She wasn't abused, doesn't do drugs, is usually in bed by 9pm if she isn't working. In her real life she is a nurse. Everyone she works with knows. She's popular with the doctors, not so much with the nurses. She makes a comfortable living doing that, enough to buy a very nice house, granted with the housing prices where they are now in our location it doesn't take a lot to get a nice house. Her other money is her retirement and for her kids education. I know what I paid her so I have an idea what she is bringing in her "other" job. While I may not understand her choices I would say that she is a very well adjusted individual. She doesn't mind her "other" job. She gets to choose who she works with. I'm not saying she loves it, but she definately doesn't hate it. She is just a genuine person and very good at her job so most of her customers are regulars who she is comfortable with. Her only vice is she likes to drink wine on occasion. I've seen her tipsy but never drunk. Her monetary dicipline shocks me, not because she is in the business, but because she is in her late twenties and thinking about her retirement. How many of you would be thinking about that if you were making the kind of money she makes in your twenties.
I'm not saying by any means that she is the norm. I think she is the exception, expecially in the sex industry. Your point is well taken though. You only know about a person what they want you to know. I once knew someone that I considered a mentor and a friend. A lot of us felt that way. He was in my chain in the my first command in the military. He had been in for about 18 years. After I moved to my second command I saw him in the news. He was arrested for distributing kiddie porn. His own kid. Never saw that one coming. Looks can be deceiving. In all walks. Porn isn't the only one with wackos. And there are some "normal" people who chose that life. It's all a crap shoot.

i read an interview with michael stefano where he said he doesn't have to work another day in his life after leaving the business. he did make it clear that he didn't waste money and doesn't have any addictions or anything but still this interview was from summer 2010 (when he first retired from porn) and he had been working actively since 1998. so in 12 years he earned enough to never work again and he's a MALE pornstar, not saying he's bullshitting but is that possible?
Michael Stefano also worked behind-the-scenes directing well over a 100 films, and I'm pretty sure he produced some also. Again, those kinds of performers tend to do better overall.
^Maybe yes and maybe no. It depends on just how much money he made in his career and where he invested it. I mean he appeared in nearly a 1000 movies and directed over a 100 movies as well so that is a lot of money making possibilities. Then there is the fact that just because he said it doesn't mean that it's true.
i doubt she would make any money from that, the song writer would. if she didnt write the song ( and i dont know how she could seeing how she cant play any instruments) then she wouldnt get shit from it

Interesting topic. This is one industry that has gone through incredible changes over the last two decades. In the 90s, the influx of hotter than hell Eastern Europeans into the business hit the market. This combined with Latin American themed titles triggered the Globalization of Porn. In addition, many more girls in the U.S. have entered the industry to take their shot. This has brought a ready and willing bounty of talent from all over the world. The next major shock and most critical was internet streaming. Both the product and the talent are now mostly a commodity. With all the filesharing and free clips the porn industry's gross dollars must have shrunk. Only a very few select girls have been able to rise above the crowd to become stars and top dollar strip club headliners. And this probably only lasts for a few short years for most of those few. Are there even any Tera Patrick's and Jenna Jameson's on the horizon? Overexposure is the problem and it is not a pun, but a literal limitation to a porn career.
Anectodally, I have read that some girls have become disappointed in the money. They probably were unrealistic about porn stardom. They also probably were not busting their ass promoting, stripping and escorting if that is what it takes. Many Eastern European porn "stars" (Angel Dark, Jennifer Stone, Sensual Jane) have been available for dates at reasonable prices in London, Prague, etc. These girls probably have lower financial expectations. Bottom-line, I don't think there was ever huge money in porn. Now I think it is even tougher. It will be interesting to see what happens to the talent pool over the next few years.
