I remember when Blu-ray initially came out the Adult industry it was huge and all of the companies were jumping on the bandwagon and releasing all their big titles on Blu-ray. Digital Playground & Hustler were 2 of the biggest players in the Blu-ray market and it seems like studios have stopped releasing new movies on Blu-ray, only a handful of Blu-ray releases have come out in the past few months most from AE Films.
Do you think that since Blu-ray has come down in price and has become more affordable since its debut in 2006/2007, that the Adult industry could move back towards Blu-ray and away from DVDs?
What are your thoughts?

No Blu-ray and it's less advanced cousin the dvd are both mediums that will not make a comeback in porn. Why buy a dvd or Blu-ray porn movie from the internet and wait for the delivery when you can stream or download it immediately from the same source? Of course that doesn't mean that some enterprising company couldn't find rare titles and remaster them to be released on a dvd or Blu-ray only. I believe there is a lucrative market for that kind of product.

No.
I think the membership site delivery model for true 1080 HD (and now 4k) porn, has pretty much shoved the Blu-ray out of economic viability as far as porn is concerned.
And, it's not the cost of Blu-ray itself.
Rather, it is the cost of replicating a minimum of 500 disks at a time -- then needing to wait for your profit until you sell through most of them -- that is the issue.
Back when DVDs were big sellers, Dave Cummings remarked about needing to sell "1500 units" before he saw any real money for himself.
I do see a niche for Blu-ray porn when it comes to high-quality restorations of shot-on-film titles and classics.
Many of us, I believe, are willing to pay the premium for high-quality and unique product.
But, for everyday scenes and older stuff (not that long ago, btw) shot before HD in standard def, Blu-ray becomes pointless, IMHO.

DVD releases are still very common, but I think that DVD releases will slowly be on the way out and all releases will be distributed exclusively on membership sites and VOD sites like Hotmovies.
It's likely easier for producers to find replicators for DVDs than Blu-ray and while Blu-ray has definitely come down in price and is more affordable than it was 10 years ago I'm sure its still a big financial risk for producers to release content on the format.
Absolutely agree about the older films, Vinegar Syndrome is doing this exactly, they're finding obscure & classic Adult films remastering them and releasing them on Blu-ray Disc & DVD usually marking that film's Blu-ray debut. They put out phenomenal transfers of the first 3 Taboo films and the Pretty Peaches trilogy.
For the true classics from the Golden Age I think there can absolutely be a market for Blu-ray. Like I would love to see classics like Devil in Miss Jones, Debbie Does Dallas & Deep Throat make their debut on the format.

No. Even Vinegar Syndrome has low Blu-ray sale numbers.
It isn't hard to see why. People complain about what they get with a 30.00 site membership. Blu-ray you would get one title. Unless suddenly more people decide to pay for their porn, Blu-ray can never make a comeback.

Agree 100% Vinegar Syndrome is a cult distributor releasing obscure titles usually for the first time on Blu-ray, I'm a big fan of theirs as they put tremendous care into their releases for titles that have small fan bases or are forgotten completely.
I find site memberships to be great value, especially those that allow for unlimited downloads, even $30 for one month is good value.

Thanks for the detailed response Goldstein! I see where you're coming from, the older content not shot in HD has no place on Blu-ray and DVD is fine for those, but the true Adult films, the older features shot on film could definitely benefit from the format like you mentioned as they can be restored, and cleaned up to look great.
I'm sure even now, there's a still a significant premium replicating Blu-ray discs as opposed to DVD, and I'm sure the Blu-ray market is really small considering the industry is moving towards UltraHD 4K content and Virtual Reality.
I see the industry phasing out DVD releases all-together and releasing content solely online

^ But, the DVD allows men to purchase and view porn without the wives and girlfriends having to know :)
Seriously, the next-to-impossible task of hiding computer histories and credit card billing, leaves an opening for paying cash at your local stroke shop if you need to keep things to yourself.
Next question: will local stroke shops still be able to survive?
And, then, there's this:
Man updates his PC to Windows 10 ... only for his wife to find his entire PORN collection transformed into a slideshow on repeat
. Reddit user FalloutBoS left his PC on overnight to update to Windows 10
. His wife woke in the morning to find his porn collection as a screensaver
. The user posted the story as a warning to others updating to new OS
. Pictures are automatically taken from the My Pictures folder to make slideshows that run on the screen when inactive

The biggest problem with porn Blu-rays was that they were too expensive as compared to a DVD. At this point most people have HD tvs but years ago they weren't the norm for everyone and neither were Blu-ray players. Plus remember that back then DVDs actually had a pretty good picture quality when played with the right equipment so there wasn't a huge difference for most people between Blu-ray and DVDs quality as compared to the jump from VHS to DVD. With mainstream movies what helped push Blu-ray sales was they offered extra content that DVDs didn't so it gave you extra for your money. Eventually the mainstream was able to sell enough Blu-rays to make lowering the price profitable. Porn from what I've seen never really did this. One of the big selling points with Blu-ray besides the shaper picture was all the extra data it could hold. Yet, most porn Blu-rays didn't off any extra content for it's higher price (or at least didn't advertise it well) and I have to believe most people were like me and didn't think a better picture was enough to justify paying more when the DVD picture was pretty good.
Another thing to remember is at the end of the day it's porn and most casual watchers don't care that much about having super picture quality. It's a nice thing to have but not worth paying extra for. It's not like mainstream movies that are very well shot and lit with great cinematography and interesting backgrounds and such. Most porn is just a couple in a room with extreme close ups of genitals.

^ Picture quality and clarity is extremely important to me!
For this reason, I now purchase and download virtually all my porn in 1080 HD -- from legitimate websites -- instead of buying DVDs or Blu-rays.
Really, about the only thing I use disks for -- now -- is to make archive backups of my vast porn library.
I use single-layer Blu-ray disks (which, after formatting, allow 23.1 GB of data), and I currently have about 800 Blu-ray disks filled with porn.
Of course, I also have a vast collection of "standard def" porn on VHS, DVD and archive drives.
Obviously, Goldstein is a very dedicated pervert.
My current archive routine is to:
(1) Copy my downloads to 4 TB archive drives (for easily accessible archive storage)
(2) Also copy my downloads to 2 TB portable drives (for actual viewing use, that is also easily moved to any device or computer)
(3) Burn my downloads to single-layer Blu-ray disks (for true archive storage, and is maintained in a database for easy reference)
So, #1 and #3 also backup each other.
Even #2 could be used as a backup, if necessary, as it is also a direct copy of the original downloads as #1 and #3 are :)
FYI, the reason I use 2 TB portable drives for actual viewing purposes, is because almost all A/V devices can only "see" a maximum drive capacity of 2 TB.
Newer computers, from Windows 7 on, can use GPT partitioning (which allows and "sees" today's much larger hard drives) instead of the older MBR system (Master Boot Record).
However, most devices (e.g. think media player boxes that connect to TVs) still want to see an MBR disk with the 2 TB limitation.
What's the Difference Between GPT and MBR When Partitioning a Drive?
Yes, it's thousands and thousands of dollars, but someone has to do it

^We must look at high resolution porn very differently because I truly believe that higher resolution porn make what might have been a great scene look a lot less so and the reason why is because those higher resolutions can't help but revealed all the skin blemishes and what not that makeup and lower resolution never could. By default that means that instead of me concentrating on the action as I should be my eye keeps straying to the impossible to miss razor burn, pimple(s), and every other little thing that is part of a natural looking woman. I'll finish by saying that I can't think of a single one of my favorite videos that would somehow be any better in true HD 1080P or let alone 4K.

No. I use myself as an example but I have friends in a similar situation: I only have one Blu-Ray player, but I have a couple of DVD players and all the computers can play DVDs. If I want to watch a Blu-Ray, I have to watch it in the family room, which isn't a good place for porn. I'll replace the other DVD players when they fail--but who knows when that will be.
I know a lot of people who don't have Blu-Ray players at all.
DVDs were a big step up over videotape. But Blu-Rays are "incremental."

If you did your research you'd figure out that the system was designed to exclude the adult industry. The porn industry was leaning towards the other format. Google is your friend. The price to replicate bluray is kept high to keep out the small guy. It's like a boys club who set rules so high you don't bother joining.

You wouldn't be saying this if you were comparing DVD (i.e. standard def) vs. Blu-ray (HD) on screens 32" and larger.
"Incremental" all of a sudden becomes "essential."
In fact, I keep having to remind my TV to show me standard def at its true size (which means a picture smaller than the screen), as there are few things worse than standard def upscaled to fill a larger screen and/or upscaled and stretched so that the image is also distorted (i.e. a 4:3 ratio made to fit a 16:9 space) as well as lacking true resolution

Outside of a few performer showcase releases or features like the Emma Marx flicks, I can't really think of much from the last few years I'd want on Bluray enough to pay $30-$40 for. I would love to see a remastered Fashionistas on Bluray. According to the dvd box it was shot in 35mm, so I would think a nice restored version could look very nice in HD.
I buy all the Vinegar Syndrome stuff, but that almost seems more geared towards fans of cult genre flicks than it does modern porn viewers.

Thanks for the reply Draxxx, I get where you're coming from, it seems that if anything Adult Blu-rays cut out content from the DVD release when put out on Blu-ray, taking away some extras found on the DVD release and charging a premium for the Blu-ray just for the superior picture alone. I feel like some releases didn't take advantage of the format as much as they could've.

I've done research, I knew the adult industry was leaning towards HD DVD during the format war since it was less expensive to manufacture and easier to replicate. It's unfortunate that there's so many barriers for the adult industry in replicating physical media and finding distribution outside of online.
I knew that Vivid when they were releasing Debbie Does Dallas...Again on Blu-ray, had a difficult time finding a Blu-ray replicator since the vast majority don't replicate Adult content and I'm sure the other studios had a hard time as well, since the replicator risks losing mainstream contracts if they replicate Adult content.

100% agree, I prefer to watch my Adult content on my 60" TV, and I find that if the aspect ratio for SD content is not correct the content looks distorted and stretched out as well as grainy. So I also need to adjust the ratio on my TV just to have the content display correctly and look as sharp as possible.
Blu-ray movies however look amazing on my large TV and as Goldstein mentioned is truly essential when watching content on a large television. The difference between Blu-ray & DVD on that large of a screen is night & day.

I agree I'm perfetly satisfied with DVDs and 720p resolution but on a marketing point there's a demand for 4K porn which is of higher resolution than a regular BRD (1080p) and that is provided directly from some sites , I have a Sony BRD player and that too would provide streaming content in 4K , Sony even have a Smartphone 4K.
There is no commercial use for porn BRD

^I've yet to find a single porn video that I want to download or watch in 4K. Aside from the fact that a 4K video file will be huge and that's saying something when you consider that most 720p videos now run into the 1-2 GB range. I can't see the interest for high resolution porn.

For $80 I can get a 1 year membership to Brazzers and download TB's & 100'2/1000's scenes in that timeframe, alternatively I could buy what 6 $15 Blurays with maybe 5 scenes each and 300 GB total. The picture quality would be better but 108p/4k downloads are good enough for most people. That is my 2 cents.

4k is really an illusive target unless you have the equipment that can actually use it -- and, that is coming on fairly soon.
Their main value to me at the moment, and I don't often download 4k files, is as a last resort to obtain a clean/functioning file (i.e. when the 1080 and 720 files are totally fucked-up).

The discs you are referring to are 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays (which won't play on a standard Blu-ray player and are in, as the name implies, 4K.
I've never understood why DVD is considered a major improvement on VHS but Blu-ray is considered "incremental." Each format is far more than incremental.
VHS was 250i definition. Consumer DVDs are 480i or 480p. A difference of 230 lines of resolution.
True HD Blu-rays are 1080p. A difference of 600 lines of resolution from DVD.
The new 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays are up to 2160p. A difference of 1080 or double a Blu-ray.

The quality of porn has nothing to do with the resolution , better looking might be correct but better quality?
His point is that to higher resolution enhances any little flaw on the woman , shows her sweating too much , and something this , unless it is a product of a very high quality , such high resolution may ruin the illusion and trasform a seemingly goddess into a regular or even ugly woman

I talk about picture quality, isn't that what we discuss here ?
I'm comfortable with real woman, brushed looking on low quality videos doesn't make them goddess for me. I wouldn't miss if i had a real life experience chance with any of my favorite stars, their flaws absolutely not disturb me.
Anyway this is not subject of the thread. There's no problem for me if you guys comfortable with lower resolution. I don't judge peoples preferences. Just except same for myself from the others.
Is there any point to telling us how much you like lower picture quality in a thread about Blu-ray discs or higher resolution porn ? He has right not an acceptable answer, make no sense.
And anybody can continue to download SD videos, Blu-ray releases will not affect them.

"Incremental" might be a bit too strong a word. But I agree that to me the jump from VHS to DVD was the most noticeable jump. That's probably because VHS just didn't have as sharp an image coupled with tv sets of that era just didn't give you a sharp picture. The double whammy of DVD clarity and higher resolution tvs made a big difference. Also, DVDs got better over the years. If you were playing VHS movie and someone walked in it would be immediately apparent that you were playing a VHS tape on your set to the point that may even mention it. If you were playing a DVD and mentioned you're watching a new Blu-ray they wouldn't doubt you unless they stared at the screen for a bit if they noticed at all. I see a bigger jump in quality between 4K and Blu-ray than Blu-ray and DVDs.
But that's just me.

I get what he's saying and agree with it. With most girls the higher resolution isn't a problem for me but there are some favs of mine that that might not have the clearest skin or you see just how much make-up is caked on or those implant scars just become more noticeable. I get the fact that that's what they actually look like but sometimes it's just distractions I can do without. But that's just a small percentage of girls. The HD stuff is okay but I'm also okay with the DVD quality also when it comes to porn. HD shots of a couch, a guy's junk, and some girl's surgery scars aren't a "must have" for me.

I don't even own a Blu-ray player since I get all my movies from online service like Netflix, and Amazon and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Physical media isn't gaining in popularity so I can't see Blu-ray being worth the time and investment for porn distributors.

I have a Blue-ray, but no Blu-ray disc.
I once played soccer for a long time. Let's say I used about as much time on playing football as I do watch porn nowadays. Or search out things about the freakin' game.
This is not a question about comeback. This is about platform.
If, like Platoo in old Greek, things are there. Those things are freakin' there. Those things ain't then making a comeback. It's freakin' there. So this is more of a personal matter or commercial issue. Comeback, I don't think so, even though I do.

No, it's not going to happen. The economics and resources required for another run at BD simply are not there. The original barrier to the adult entertainment industry adopting Blu-Ray was that there were no American replicators willing to work with them. It wasn't a price thing. It was a "We don't want your business." thing, because the replicators were (allegedly) told by Sony and Panasonic not to do business with them, lest they have an "incident" or any negative associations with the format. The HD-DVD side of the industry, which didn't involve Sony and Panasonic - the two BDA juggernauts that controlled the bulk of American replication lines and decisions concerning the BD format - was willing to work with the adult industry and get their HD products on the format, resulting in a large wave of HD-DVD releases when the format was at it's peak. Eventually, the adult players were able to get BD authoring and replication through Taiwanese companies that Sony did business with, which is how all the porn companies get it done.
At this point, the global optical disc replication market has contracted severely due to the decline of CD and DVD in favor of digital downloads/streaming/piracy and many of the US BD replicators have gone out of business or shut down plants, so the adult industry still can't get anything made in this country, apart from DVDs, which are cheap and easy to make. In fact, there are a few companies that work solely with the adult entertainment industry to do just that, but they do not have the money required to upgrade their replicators to do BD/UHD-BD replication. As for UHD-BD, the authoring tools are not available to the adult entertainment industry and there are only a few replication lines in US, UK, Germany, and Japan which are tightly controlled and there are no Asian replicators outside of Sony's Japanese plant to cater to the global adult entertainment industry. However, UHD-BD has a very robust and complicated DRM system that is beyond what DVD and BD had, so it's a very appealing plateau for the adult entertainment industry to reach. Right now HD and UHD downloads are the future of things, but many companies are hesitant to put much effort into it, because it's simply too easy to pirate unprotected downloads that have no DRM system in place, which is why there is currently a concerted global effort on taking down torrent and file-hosting sites and increasing the powers of copyright protection laws to make punishments harsher and more feasible. Since the courts have ruled ISPs can be responsible for piracy, they have been actively working to institute anti-piracy measures and enact actual punishments for subscribers who do file sharing through P2P.

This was a very thoughtful and detailed response, thanks! I completely agree I knew that during the HD format war, the Adult industry preferred HD DVD over Blu-ray disc because of that very reason, it was difficult to find Blu-ray replicators since they also had contracts with the major studios and didn't want to risk losing those because they replicated adult films. Sony and the BDA, while they didn't outright ban Adult on the format, made it difficult for the industry to find replicators, in the US as you mentioned, outsourcing the process and which likely lead to the large premium for Adult Blu-ray over DVD copies of the same film when it was introduced 10 years ago.
It's unfortunate that the industry has largely abandoned optical disc formats and Blu-ray especially. I'm a big fan of having Adult on Blu-ray since it's physical media a Full HD 1080p (or 1080i for some early Blu-ray releases) copy of the film that I'd own, without taking up hard drive space or having a site membership.

I think 480 DVDs look like crap on 4K TVs. With all the 4K TVs coming out and replacing 40inch 1080p TVs hopefully & maybe the porn companys will try Blu-Ray again? Maybe 4K disc?

That depends on the television. 480p DVDs don't look that horrible on my 50" 4K television. I doubt the adult film industry will ever touch UHD Blu-rays. Considering a standard Blu-ray player won't play them and the mainstream industry still doesn't have a huge market share in them yet. As much as I would love Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray to come back, I honestly don't expect it ever to.

I hope so, the price of Blu-ray discs has come down exponentially, I think in a few years BRD could replace DVD as the physical media of choice for distribution, since 480p resolution just doesn't really cut it for 2017. As 4K TVs start to come down in price, I'm sure the industry would want to pursue a higher resolution media for physical distribution, as a large portion of the market still watches Adult on their televisions. Unless the industry moves towards Roku exclusively for streaming content directly onto TVs and forgoes physical media altogether.
4K discs are extremely expensive, and I'm sure it would be difficult for the Adult industry to find replicators for those.
Thanks for your thoughts!

DVDs look fine still on my TV. Blu rays look better though. I think blu ray will replace DVDs eventually, even soon, and the better features and perhaps even the likes of Blacked and Tushy will still get BR release.

Interesting insights (look at the different charts at the website).
United States Combined DVD and Blu-ray Sales Chart for Week Ending October 30, 2016
Seems to me that mainstream movie sales on Blu-ray vs. DVD cater to slightly different markets (e.g. some titles do better on one format and vice-versa).
As always, DVDs have a HUGE cost advantage (especially with older titles).
Also, most people who are watching movies on disk -- on their computers -- are more than likely limited to DVDs (as very few off-the-shelf "home" computers and/or laptops come with Blu-ray drives).
Seems like Netflix and Amazon streaming services are cutting into disk sales in a major way, with streaming revenues beginning to surpass sales.
I can almost see streaming as viable for a mainstream movie that you are, essentially, going to watch straight through (with perhaps a pause or two to pee or get a snack).
Plus, many Blu-ray players and Tivo, for example, can stream movies directly to your TV without even going through your computer.
However, for porn, streaming holds little interest for me (think start/stop/slo-mo, repeat, etc...). The total porn experience :)
Also, porn downloads in 1080 HD are far superior A/V wise than streaming, IMHO.

Especially given:
1) the slim profit margins as is, and
2) the sheer number of titles an adult distributor put out
The economics just don't work.
