Thank goodness the days of VHS are gone. Getting charged for not rewinding. Listening to your player rewind some tapes and wondering if it's going to make it all the way back or if it's going to break the tape. Watching a movie and suddenly the movie stops playing and you try to eject the tape and it won't come out or about two feet of tape is still stuck in the player. Bad tracking. The stores that only had one copy of the movie you wanted to rent and you could never catch it when it was there. Fastforwarding to a ceratin point with all that "noise" on the screen. Trying to figure out how far to fastforward to the spot you want to see. Not being able to pause for that long. One time I rented a VHS tape and accidently recorded over the movie (not porn). I had to go to another store and rent the same movie so I could record the movie back on to the tape. There've been a few times I rented a porn movie and at the end of it someone had recorded themselves having sex on it. They weren't ugly but it was creepy looking.

You know when DVDs first came out I was annoyed because I did not have a DVD recorder, they were too costly at the time for me to afford. I made my library of adult action from recordings after renting titles from local video shops and recording it onto VHS blank tapes. I rented and recorded thousands of scenes since the early 80s, the vast majority of which I discarded as my VHS tapes deteriorated before I could put them onto DVD. VHS tapes for the most part had a shelf life of about 15 years before grainy lines would show up and they became shot. I went through so many DVD player/recorders over the years it was ridiculous. I can't count the times a tape would get stuck in my machine and I would have to go about disassembling the machine to get it out. I did not want to take the player to someone to see I had been watching a Fuck movie.
^ There was always that worry that your VCR would eat and destroy a tape you rented and you'd have to pay for it or a porn tae would get stuck in the machine and you'd have to take it to the shop to get it out and look like a perv. When DVDs first came out I wasn't really convinced they'd be around long. I thought they'd be like LASER DICS players. Remember those? The discs were super expensive and the selection of discs were super small. You had to really like a movie back then to spend over a hundred bucks on one movie.

Until you mentioned it I had forgotten about them. I think they were around in the 80s but no one could afford them. Throughout the 80s and 90s I used to love checking out the box covers in video stores. What I hated were the ugly looks people gave me and couldn't wait to pay for the rental and get the hell out!!! Returning the tapes to the stores was always a pain in the ass.
This is what I was going to say, I agree completely. Of course the picture quality is better today, and the technology is better too, but I miss 80's porn for sentimental reasons. I probably liked porn more back then because it was new to me. But it's fun to remember the old days. Kind of like watching Saved By The Bell and seeing Zack Morris' phone.
Most people will form a sentimental attachment to any sort of pop culture they enjoyed during their teen years/early adulthood, so that's not unusual. I have seen quite a few 80s films. Retroactively though -- I didn't really start watching adult films til the early 90s. I am impressed by the production values. A lot of films have real effort put into them, and seem to be at least as well made as TV movies or cheapo-indie flicks of the time. But the sex? Maybe its just cuz I'm spoiled now, but it's all so "meh". Just the same in and out in most scenes. The looping drives me nuts. And yes to echo other posters here... the lion mane hair on the women, the mullets on the men, the shoulder pads, the dangling earrings, the Miami Vice pastels ...BLECH.

oh god no...the women are by far better these days...back then, you'd be lucky to see a few who were truly gorgeous...now you can throw a condom and hit tons of supremely hot women...and these days the sex is nastier,better and more intense...and thankfully more of the girls go clean shaven than back then lol
^The only things I agree with you are that the sex is a lot nastier today and more girls are clean shaven but the rest is a question of opinion. There might be a lot more hot women today but that's only because there are a lot more porn performers. I think the sex was significantly better in the 80's because it wasn't gonzo porn except for loops. The women were better performers because they had to act and offer great sex scenes. If I was stuck with choosing only one decade for my porn then the 80's would be my only choice. Of course age probably has a lot to do with it and since a lot of 80 porn is no longer available then it's hard for anyone to see how great their movies were.
I miss the 80's for two things seeing a smooth potion change is priceless and no fake squirts in every scene

Neither era was perfect, but things seemed a little more sensual and hotter in 80s porn. These days its all jackhammer fucking, terrible fake moaning, spitting and fingers shoved in mouths and assholes. It looks more like a sadistic, extreme workout for the woman than any type of fun sexual encounter. Women don't seem to have any fun in modern porn. There might be more women and a larger variety of beautiful body types, but they are mostly terrible performers. There is an art to being a great pornstar, and most girls simply don't have the gift.

^while i agree that things have gotten a lot more hardcore since the 80's, i would venture the opinion that the girls these days are also a lot more hardcore than back in the day which ties into why a lot of movies being shot now are as raw and filthy as they are...which is always a good thing lol

The popularity of the vcr pumped cash into the business which brought some really pretty girls in. That's the good part. The actual product wasn't as intense as it is today and most fans would find it too tame. It's fun to go back and check out Candie Evans.
