| Dirk New Member 2 Posts 12/01 |  Posted - Dec 5 2001 : 4:19PMHi, I'm absolutely bricking it at the moment: Being fairly new to importing Adult DVD's from the USA (To UK) I was amazed at the cheap prices at FivestarDVD.com and have bought in a total of 45 DVD's (Only came to just under £300-I could get maybe 10-15 at that price over here in UK). they have been sent over Global priority in packages of 5, 24 and 16--I believe in seperate GP envelopes. I just-within last 3 hours- read of the SEVERE pemalties etc, that can be had for importing Obscene materials into UK, as from october 2001. Now, I understand that pissing and fisting etc, are the ones that they are looking out for etc, and my order *as far as I am concerened/aware* does NOT contain any of this (but who knows if just 1 scene does contain some of it?) But, are 45 titles ( 24, 16 and 5 titles per envelope) constitute such a bulky, large, 'visible' order that HM customs/Police may call on me and arrest me? I don't care at this moment if they confiscate them, but the prospect of being arrested is, seriously, making me feel quite suicidal. If I'd realised it wa such a serious crime, I would never have bothered. 5* have been brilliantly re-assuring and on the 2 previous occasions I ordered, delivered exactly on the 4th day after shipping. ( envelopes contained, previously, 3 and 6 titles) Please, is there anybody here with experience of 'large' orders, and of being visited by the Authorities due to ANY number of titles? This is re-assuring, but am i taking it too far to think that customs may look at all 5 parcels ( I am due 45 titles) and think" Large importer, let's nail the b***rd"! I know I sound paranoid, but can all 5 parcels be seen at the same time, and recorded by customs etc as one shipment? sorry for wasting your times, I just regret doing such a large pervy order! | JMO Member UK 104 Posts 2/01 | Posted - Dec 5 2001 : 10:33PM Now, and I apologise about being long-winded, I'll have to say you have made a mistake going candy-store at FiveStar (wonderful people by the way). There is so much mail going through the system that theoretically there is a good chance a single package will sneak through unmolested. However, more than one disk to a package is risky. Under an EU quota system, packages valued at less than £18 UK get through the system untouched. Packages over £18 get surcharged 3.5% import duty, then VAT on top of that plus the value of the package, so on a £20 disk, the bill would be (approximately) £4.30. I'd be more worried about having to pay ID+VAT on your packages, but then of course the attention of them having to bill you for VAT might arouse their curiosity and they might check a package or two. Sorry to be negative about the whole thing, but I hope I've put some kind of perspective on the situation. Let us know how you get on. [Link] |

I tend to keep all my orders to a maximum 2 disks/order limit to avoid Duty charges and to minimise my losses if the package goes missing. Retailers are under no obligation to re-ship a lost order. As Flinty and JMO have already pointed out I wouldn't worry too much. At worst you will get a bill for extra Duty charges. I assume all the 45 titles were different. Multiples of the same title will raise their suspicions that you intend to sell them for profit and not for personal viewing. Keep us updated as to how things work out. [Link] |

If it all complies with R18 guidelines, which, though drawn up by BBFC with "legal" and police advice, are what the Customs mob are supposed to be going by to decide on what's obscene. Basically, the BBFC are passing most porn with minor cuts at most so there should be NO justification for a Customs seizure in your case, based on what you say. Just get your cheque book ready for when the postie calls and says: "There's something to pay on this one, mate..." [Link] |
