I'm curious as I see many of you belong to multiple sites and are downloading scenes to, I assume, your computer. I'm curious to learn more about that. Is this to a desk top, laptop? What size hard drive are you guys using? Is it secure? time commitment ect? Mac or PC I have one of each. I've done some searches in the forum and it appears the a 4TB portable HD is the way to go? How many full length DVDs would that be? As far as downloading vs transferring my current collection over it looks like Video Box may be the way to go as well? Currently I rent DVDS and buy every now and then if something really knocks my socks off, but I have nothing on my computer. I will edit to add that if someone would be kind enough to post a really basic "how to" on downloading and storing digital porn it would be greatly appreciated. OK I'll go first here. Hopefully someone is also responding so you can get a more well rounded approach. If you are downloading, a 3 or 4 Tb external HD works well. You can download to either a desktop or laptop it doesn't make a difference. Mac or PC, either is fine but there are probably a few differences when it comes to handing the files and that is your own preference. As far as how much you can put on the 4 Tb HD, it depends on the bit rate of the content you will be storing. There are a lot of available formats out there to download in but basically you break it down to the 3 most popular: Resolutions and general bit rates (MP4): 1080p "HD" (6k - 12k) 720p "HD" (3k - 8k) 480p "SD" (1.7 - 2.4k) Just from looking at some of the files I have I would say if you have a mix of all 3 resolutions you would be looking at about 1.5 Gb per .5 hour of footage (less data if you plan on storing more SD footage than HD) So if 1 hour was 3 Gb (this is probably close to being a 720p file) you could put up 900 - 1000 hours of 720p footage on a 3 Tb hard drive (maybe 1200 for 4 Tb, of course there is always the issue of how much space you should leave empty on any hard disk). If you getting vids from video box then you will probably be using mp4's and so you could put a ton more movies on your HD. Somebody help me out if my math is wrong here... As far as security -- who knows? At this point in the development of internet it's anyones guess as to how much of it is truly private. If you have followed any of the Snowden stuff then you know that they can pretty much get whatever they want whenever they want it (or at least they could before he went public). Not sure about cyber crime. Also not sure about who collects or sells your personal information. That's a bit off topic and please let's not turn this topic into some conspiracy conjecture free-for-all. That's the storage part. Downloading is easy. Right click "save as" and select your path. Sometimes its better to preselect your path and then left click "save" (this is for when the browser forces a new tab per download). OK, hope that helps.
IMO Keeping the storage device to about 1TB or 2TB is the smartest bet. What happens when you spend all that time and money on site memberships, download a shit ton of scenes onto your laptop, then transfer them all to a 4TB portable drive and then...the drive fails and dies. There goes 4TB of porn, all gone. I would keep the storage devices no larger than 2TB, preferably 1TB. That's what I have done.
Sooner or later, hard drives fail. That's a fact. If you're going to store your collection, it is absolutely ESSENTIAL that you use some sort of RAID, optimally across two physical hard drives. If you don't know, RAID 1 essentially mirrors your data two two places, so if something happens to one copy, your OS can read the other. A hardware based RAID external drive enclosure is not that expensive, and you just buy two identical hard drives to put in the enclosure. If you are by any chance running Linux, you can even use software-based RAID 1 across any two partitions in your computer. It's not that hard to set up, either. Investing in a a Blue-Ray writer might be another solution, depending on how much you've got to store. BR hasn't been around long enough for us to know how long BR's will last, but they will probably last until you're not interested in porn anymore :) I think triple layers can store up to 100G or something like that.

What is the size of your porn collection? Well, you could backup everything to DVDs (in addition to your hard-drive storage), maintain a database so you know what DVD every file is backed-up on, file them all away in CD/DVD bookshelf wallets and then "never look at {them} again." So, to summarize the archive: (a) Original DVD (b) Original VHS (c) Original VHS converted to DVDs (d) Original downloads (e) Create DVD backups for all downloaded movies and files (f) Harvest all movies by scene (i.e. create a new file for every scene) (g) Make a DVD data disk backup (see above) for all files you harvest and create (h) Maintain hard-drive storage for all files you harvest and create (i) Create multiple portable drives with your favorite scenes for use with your media player(s), and for taking your essential stroke material with you when you travel (this way you don't risk damaging the original media, backup DVD or hard-drive storage) If you're not doing all of the above, you're just not taking this seriously enough

Thanks guys. Yes, I see it's been moved. Forgot to even look here for answers. OK, some background, My collection is on DVD and it's at about 200 DVDs. All full length movies, very little HD that I'm aware of. I have two old PCs with a Gig HD. I have a MacBook Pro. MY PCs are running XP... still. I am computer literate, but have no special knowledge or skills. My mains accomplishment as far as my porn collection goes is to have burned back ups of my DVDs in case I broke one or it when bad. My plan or hope is to use one or the other platform to back up my DVDs to a TB external drive. I'd like these files easily accessible for viewing on the computer. If that helps at all?
I am considering what to do with my downloads . As I am on a laptop now , and cannot access via cable a storage device , any recommendations for wireless storage , I would probably need two maybe three smaller ones , what is the range/speed like ? what about storing online , there seem to be several sites , concerns about them going out of biz and then pfft , it's all gone ?
^Your laptop does not have USB ports? External USB hard drives are small package size, comparable to the size of your laptop's AC adapter brick; easily stored in a desk drawer or in your laptop carry case. Yes, the "going out of biz" is what people worry about with online storage. But also (and equally important IMO) is the practical matter of the time and effort involved in uploading mass amounts of data to the online storage place. What type/speed of internet connection (cable, DSL?) do you have, and what is your UPLOAD speed, and how much storage (100GB, 500GB, 1TB, ...?) are you thinking about?
Good point , I have cable dsl , pretty quick but would take a while . I had considered a wireless external hard drive , don't want one that I would have to connect up , as it would negate the point of discretion . they do make 1tb one , that would be plenty I would think .
Well, maybe I jinxed myself by talking about it here, but it happened. My 3T POS Seagate hard drive failed. Dead. Not even detected anymore by the OS. The ONLY thing that kept this from being a tragedy is the fact that I had a RAID1 setup. I just ordered an identical drive from NewEgg, will-called it, installed it, re-synced it over night, and I'm back in business without losing a SINGLE BYTE. Guys, seriously, if you store your collection on a HDD, please use some form of RAID that gives redundancy, say RAID1.
re-syncing a 3T over nicht ? I would have thought it would take longer. But thats the thing with big RAIDs ... once one or more disks failed how long does it take to re-sync and how much stress will all the other disks go thrue until mission complete ? And a "APC" Unit should be around too :) especially if you have a big RAID in re-sync mode Cube
