Sometimes it just takes way too long for the mods to ask you to remove the latest ill-mannered, ignorant, racist troll.
Some people I just want to forget they exist. I'd like to be able to read the forums without being driven into a depression by how vile and moronic one individual can be. I'd like to read the posts from our serious members without having to wade through pages of contemptible verbal diarrhea.
I realize such things are subjective, but it would be nice to be able to press a button to make the worst offenders disappear from my own screen.
No names needed here - new ones are popping up every few weeks, but if you get the chance to add such a feature, I'd really, really appreciate it.

The hard part is when a non-ignored user quotes a post from an ignored user. That's a lot of work.
Also, if the ignored user starts a topic do you want to ignore the whole thread even if non-ignored users post in the thread?

As hard as it is to hold your tongue with some people, it's probably better just to try and ignore them or email a mod or something if they're really out of control.

I can see that would be very difficult, in fact I had assumed it would be impossible. I could live with seeing the quotes. Just ignoring the main posts would be enough.
I hadn't thought of that one. Yes, I want to see the thread if non-ignored users have posted in it. If I decide I don't like the whole thread I simply will not read it in future.
@RandomPrecision: I agree it is best to avoid replying and minimize the impact. Occasionally I get suckered, sorry, but I'm working on it.
Sometimes, I feel as if the offender is not breaking any specific site rule that I could point to and report them to a moderator. After all, there's no rule that says they can't have opinions that are offensive to me personally. Those are the times I would use an ignore feature if it was available.

I wonder if it might be possible to implement not only an "ignore" feature, but also some kind of "administrative twilight zone" feature? The latter would be used by management for repeat-offender deactivated users, like the Squirt-whatever guy, the Aspens Stevens guy, Ibrox f/k/a Phlogiston, etc. What it would do would allow them to post freely, and have their comments and threads appear on their own computer, but they would be invisible to all other logged-in and guest users. Eliminating the drama (or whatever twisted thrill) they get out of coming back repeatedly and provoking responses and/or getting deactivated, and replacing it with simply appearing to be totally ignored by the entire board, no matter how much they cry out for attention, might cause them to lose interest in coming around anymore.

Another idea -
Maybe some kind of button that users would click for "Annoying posters". If enough people click the "Annoying poster" button for a specific user, it sends the case to Drew or Steph for review. Obviously, it would need to be restricted to senior members or something to keep idgets from abusing it.
Of course, I have no idea how hard something like this would be to set up. Just a thought.

maybe the ignore function could allow you to see the topics posted by these users, but in any given thread their posts are collapsed by default, so you have the option of seeing what they say if you choose.

No need to filter the quotes, just the original post. It's very easy to skip a thread started by a poster whose opinions you've had enough of. You'll find a decrease in the amount of quotes to these posters as well, as the "ignore" function becomes more popular.
Worth an experiment IMO.
