while there are definitely people who use drugs to do their job, there are more who use drugs to escape their job and other realities.
i hate the word drugs. everyone uses some kind of drug. i'd rather smoke a joint than ingest an advil.

steph, i think it may be more an issue of people doing the stuff to DO their job, rather than escape from it. hell, i want to escape from my job daily. it's rare i think i need something to get me to my office.
Sheesh, half the people I know in NYC are doing X and blow and lots of pot ... I don't know about the other stuff. Prescription pain killers are a cross-the-board favorite. But then all my friends are freaks.

i thought the whole point of not having an office job was to do more drugs? so when someone says i'm a pornstar, or i'm a writer, or i'm a freelance graphic designer, what they really mean is i like to smoke pot.

office jobs suck. i just cannot for the life of me, not laugh hysterically that some stanford econ phd that sounds exactly like "apu" does not sound like "apu" from the simpsons should i be high. tragic.
Obviously, you have each had experiences with drugs in porn and seen others who either resorted to it or were enticed to use drugs by the men who control the industry and want to control the women in porn. This is the absolute worst kind of "sexual harrassment" which exists wherever there are men and women working together. Men have the power and use it to intimidate women and get them to believe that they have to compromise their principles and participate in "sexual acts" in order to keep their jobs or get advancement. It's been this way forever in every walk of life, but enlightened businesses have worked very hard to create rules of conduct for men with power that if violated result in them being fired without recourse. From what you are saying here, I take it porn is not quite that enlightened yet and the men in power are never questioned. If enough women in porn work together with the men in power positions to change this, the change which is inevitable will be accelerated. The fact that you both care about this and can speak openly here says porn is not on square one and that change has already taken place. Keep working on it and get some of the men with the power to help you and you will succeed.

I have a question for Kami, Devinn, Jewel and other actors who have contributed to this thread. When you first broke into the business did any veteran actors take you under his/her wing?
It seems to me that forming an apprentice like relationship with an an older more experienced actor would be more effective at steering a newbie away from malevolent influences and bad career choices than just raising the age of consent.

Well when I started Porn I was with Peter North who's a health nut and workout freak so drugs was never an issue for me. I don't think pot is a bad drug it should be leaglaized I don't like when I see girls who get hooked on hard drugs it's sad and it ruins their looks. I'm not really into the drug scene never have been even when I was a teen. I've partied yes but I don't make it a daily habit and do it to get through the day. Having fun at a party is one thing but doing drugs to get through life is another. I hate seeing girls work to pay for a fix it's a waste of time and of money.
I am going to put together a bunch of Jamesn's quotes. They pretty accurately reflect my experience in the finance industry. I usually worked 70+ hour weeks my first few years. Nowadays, if I work 80 hours in one week, I can barely make it through 50 hours the next week, and I am only 30 years old. Luckily, I'm no longer the newbie that gets slammed with an insane amount of work with zero notice. By the way, taking stimulants will not work longer than a week or so before you crash, from what I've seen.
All of the above numbers are without partying.
The lifestyles just do not mix. You would be so worn out after a weekend that you would realize that the substance assisted partying just isn't worth it. I don't even drink any more, and I use to drink like a fish in college.
Strippers talk to me and peg me as the rich yuppy with fuckloads of coke and ecstacy (crystal meth?). "Are you rollin?" Apparently those are the drugs of choice for my stereotype. I should just lead them along, but I'm too honest.
Of course, plenty of guys I know at the office used to toke up in college, but I doubt that they do so anymore. If they do, they certainly don't do it frequently. They're all married with children. I'm the only bachelor I know.
I wish I liked how I feel on drugs. I pretty much hate how I feel on every pain killer I've ever been prescribed, so much so that my doctor stopped talking to me about taking them "as needed for pain" and told my care-giver to just make me take them on a schedule. I don't even understand "high" - I've tried pot (more than once), I just fall asleep and wake up with a headache and drymouth. I tried "acid", I don't like the feeling of unreality, and it didn't make me feel good in any way, just made me feel like the world didn't make any sense. I'm afraid of heroin and cocaine - my father was a heroin addict. I won't ever try those. I've tried nicotine patches and lozenges (smoking is nasty) and it made me jittery and headachey, but I did experience the stimulate effect. Didn't make me feel good, though. I am hung up on caffiene, but I think I'm just addicted to drinking hot water, I notice when I start feeling the withdrawal effects and so I switch to decafs and herbals for a couple weeks until it goes away. I don't associate a good feeling with it, just that I really do enjoy drinking hot water - decaf, caf, or herbal. I've taken antihistimines when I didn't have a cold, they usually make me feel more alert, except when they make me fall asleep. Alert doesn't really equal good, though, no high for me there, either. I drank socially for a couple years. Alcohol does make me feel relaxed and I do like that feeling. It also makes me sick within an hour or two, the sick feeling lingers for a day or two. Even after just one drink. I rarely consider the relaxed feeling worth the pay-off of the sick feeling anymore. I consider myself to now be a non-drinker, even though I do have a drink once or twice a year. It's pretty much the same relationship I have with ice-cream, I like it enough to put up with getting sick from it every now and then.
Nothing I've ever injested has ever given me a feeling of euphoria, powerfulness, wellness, or any other especially good feeling. Some stop pain, more or less, or make me feel more or less aware of pain. I suppose some people would feel that lack of pain is pleasure. I don't. Maybe I'm incapable.
All that being said, as streetwise as I thought I was when I went into porn, I was exposed to more drugs than I ever knew existed (and certainly never thought to see people using so casually) on sets and in the industry in general. I will say I thought about trying some of them, but I never did. I still think about it.

I don't see the point in trying drugs or cigarettes, especially once you're past the collegiate stage of life, and especially considering the drugs you haven't tried. I smoke and wish I didn't. I suspect that 99.999% of people who smoke wish they didn't.
if you mean smoke cigaretes yeah probably most wish they didn't, but if your talking ganj, most who know what's up are still down. Smoke Chronic motherfuckers.

As far as ganja is concerned, I just don't feel any desire to smoke it, and haven't since college. I'm not making any judgment on those who choose to do so, it just doesn't stimulate me. I guess porn is my drug of choice.

hey walter, going through old threads after a haitus and have to say thank you for being honest.
Actually.....people never stop developing. While it's true that a person isn't going to be the same person at 25 as they were at 18, a person won't be the same at 50 as they were at 40, either. People are constantly learning, developing and changing. I've met 19 year olds who were far more "wise" to the ways of the world than some 40 year olds I've known.
I don't think porn makes people use drugs. I think anyone who makes porn and who also uses drugs is going to be a lot more visible than somone who pushes shopping carts for a living and also takes drugs. It doesn't really matter what a person does for a living. There are drug users everywhere, in all walks of life and lines of work. Some lines of work might not be so prone to it because they do random testing. Obviously, people are going to be more careful if they know their employer might spring a random drug test on them any time. Fact is, any employer that doesn't do random testing will probably have just as many drug users as the porn industry does.
