Hey folks,
I was reading an email from a friend the other day, and he was saying that Video-X-Pix are likely releasing Through the Looking Glass as their next Platinum Elite disc set, with an audio commentary by Jamie Gillis.
Then he pointed something out that I had never thought about - a lot of these classic performers and directors are getting old, and without trying to be morbid, lets just say time is running out to get these auteurs on a commentary.
So, I guess I would love to hear thoughts on this - are the golden era folks just too private/moved on to other things? Or are studios not bothering with such grandiose treatment?
And, of course, suggestions for your dream star/writer/director/producer commentary, and which movie. Jamie Gillis is mine, and hopefully that's going to happen. John Leslie is a close second, for Talk Dirty to Me.

Honestly I think that studios aren't really trying. Some classic stars are dead. Others have probably moved on and are unreachable anymore. However, many seem to still be around and I wish studios would put the extra work into getting the commentaries now while they are still alive to tell the tales/still remember what they can.

I don't see that many commentaries in adult, period. Is this something the fans (consumers) are interested in?
Marie (Madison) has been talking about doing one for the re-pressing of "Regarding Jenny", and we've been debating on whether it's worth the extra production.
Any thoughts?

I always love a commentary if it involves people from the production, especially when you get several people on it, cast members, director, etc. When they get people who weren't involved in the production, I'm not such a big fan.

I love commentaries. I loved the video commentary in "Dark Angels" where the actors and director could be seen in a little box in the corner talking throughout the movie. If the cast gets frisky whilst watching the movie again you can have a scene within a scene!

^Whoa! Meta-porn?
I like commentaries, but usually for older films where they brought back the director/writer/stars. Stormy has done a few commentaries, and they're usually interesting and fun. Someone told me that on her movies they don't do commentary during the sex scenes - I can't remember if this is the case, but if it is I'm not in favor. I think explanations/discussion of what's happening during the sex scene might be one of the most interesting and subversive things to happen in porn in a while!

Wicked always seems to have the most thorough and interesting commentaries. Of course, they also are actually willing to sink a little money into their films in terms of locations, props, and wardrobes which helps to give you something to comment on. I think commentaries for a gonzo would be completely pointless.

I've always been a huge fan of commentaries on any film, including porn.
When the big releases come out in Sept, I'm always looking to see if commentary is added to the film.
As for people that stop talking during the sex scenes, yeah some do that. Never did get way. I'd watch the actual movie before I put the commentary on so I'd rather have them chatting throughout the whole thing.

Cast and crew commentaries are not easy to do well because usually it is the first time they are seeing the finished movie. The actors often find themselves 'watching' the movie and it feels odd to talk over it especially when they are enjoying the movie and seeing how the editing all came together. I often find that I have to keep the conversation flowing by saying anything relevant that pops into my mind. We had a great time doing the audio cast commentary for Flight Attendants because Kayden Kross was so into watching the movie I had to keep poking her to chime in which she did with some interesting stories but James Bartholet is always great to have in a cast commentary because quite frankly he won't shut up which is a good thing in my opinion.
When it comes to sex scenes, I think the best cast commentary we ever had was with Not the Cosbys XXX because Misty Stone really enjoyed watching the sex action. She is quite descriptive and it's often wonderful listening to such a beautiful girl talk about hard core sex as they are watching it. For the fantasy buffs, unfortunately I have yet to be on a cast commentary where the girls start to take off their clothes as they describe the sex action but that might be something for the future especially if we offer video cast commentary (which I am not a big fan of now but might be if they get naked). I love listening to mainstream cast commentaries after I have watched the movie because there are keen insights that are fun to learn about the making of a movie. So, if you are into these commentaries especially on silly movies, check out Not Bewitched XXX, Flight Attendants and Not the Cosbys XXX. Also in Flight Attendants we have a lot of cast interviews that really shed a lot of light on what is going on in their minds. If the actors are interesting, then cast commentaries and interviews work very nicely. If they are boring, then they need to get naked to compensate but that is just my opinion!

^ I have a copy of Not the Cosbys, but never listened to the commentary - I'll definitely do that now, especially as Misty talks about the sex scenes. Thanks!

I don't know whether &quotcommentary" on adult movies would be as interesting as old time mainstream movies. I just can't see it for gonzo all sex movies. What can someone really say about what is going on that will make it any more interesting or informative?
Even BTS often don't tell you what goes on behind the scenes, and much of the footage is taken up with the girl posing (for publicity pics) beside a swimming pool or a palm tree just preening herself, bending over, opening up her ass cheeks. Many companies just fail even when BTS are involved.
I think for older golden age movie, perhaps just interviewing some performers after they have watched the movie might provide more insights. It is fresh in their minds, you actually see what the performer looks like today, and you are not distracted by the movie shown over the audio commentary, you know who is talking at any given point, if you are not that familiar with them. I think Kelly Nichols did a nice brief interview in THE TOOLBOX MURDERS for the DVD reissue. The making of DEEP THROAT documentary with on-screen interviews with Damiano and others were quite informative/interesting. Perhaps that should be the format to be followed.

Damiano's commentary for THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES is fine, informative, all the things it should be. If a xxx flick stands the test of time, maybe a commentary is in order. Most of this stuff, epsecially gonzo, why bother?

Golden Age classics are definitely ripe for commentaries - that's what I would ideally like, along with interviews.
As for gonzo, I think it would be interesting if the commentaries were honest and technical, involving cameraman/director and the performers. Those who don't want their fantasy spoiled can just avoid them, but I would find it fascinating (assuming the people involved had some smarts).
