Hey folks - I'm interested in seeing some more pornographic adaptations of novels having just watched Autobiography of a Flea. I saw The Passions of Carol (and Oliver Twink) a while back, which are both Christmas Carol adaptations. Now we have the Twilight parody, but that's more of a parody of the movie. Then there's the softcore Story of O and Lady Chatterly, and the dozens of Dracula adaptations.
Any other suggestions?

Gore Gore---Watch Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour, then Robert Mc Callum's V-The Hot One, then Kris Kramski's Belle de Jour for a triple bill---T0M

Awesome - Belle du Jour is a novel? I had no idea (never watched the movie either, even though I love Catherine Deneuve).
Thanks for the recs so far people - more please! I suppose it's too much to ask for an X-rated Wuthering Heights (perhaps not...). I also just remembered Playboy did a pornographic version of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market (pictorial, of course) that drew out the incestuous/lesbian elements. Worth checking out if anyone's into that sort of thing.

Just ordered the novel. I will certainly be organizing this triple bill.

There was an old James Avalon film that was a take off on Kafka's "The Trial."

Gore Gore---I've never read Belle de Jour but I know Bunuel likes taking original source material and shaping it into something marked with his own surrealistic stamp. Give us an update if all this reading and watching comes to fruition.
By the way, I think the James Avalon movie is something called Trial by Copulation, something reviewers slammed for being dark as in too dark to see. Hershel Savage plays the Kafka-esque character.

There have been a lot of Alice in Wonderland and The Picture of Dorian Gray knockoffs. I think The Tempest has been done also.

I know your feelings on the film, but AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FLEA is an obvious one.
Also, Radley Matzger's THE IMAGE is essentially a word for word adaptation of the novel.

Sweet!
Here is what I have come up with:
Shakespeare adaps:
A Midsummer Night's Cream
Romeo and Julian
Hamlet: For the Love of Ophelia
Taming of the Screw
The Secret Lives of Romeo and Juliet
An adap of Paradise Lost is apparently available, too.
Also, I read something about a bible adap - The Cumming of Jizzus, but I wonder if it's just a hoax, kinda like Porn and Penetration.

I'll second V: The Hot One, one of the best xxx films I've seen, and The Image, the best hardcore film I've ever seen period.
Hopefully The Image will get a blu-ray release from Synapse sometime soon in the future, I know they want to do it.
The Story of Joanna is essentially Damiano's unofficial adaptation of The Story of O.
Kemal Horlu's Virgin and the Lover is an adaptation of a French novella as well, I have that film (from Excalibur) but haven't watched it yet. Looks interesting though, and it has the underrated Eric Edwards in the lead role. Horlu also did a Madame Bovary rip-off called Woman in Love, although I've read it isn't that great, but I find almost all of his films at least worth a watch (I enjoyed his film Feelings, although that's not an adaptation or anything).
The Cumming of Jizzus is actually a product of Robin Bougie, the writer of the Cinema Sewer exploitation/porn zine. Not really a feature, but not exactly gonzo either, from what I've read about it. He wrote about the making of it a bit here.
In the realm of Bible-based porn there's the Mitchell's infamous flop Sodom & Gomorrah, which is really terrible btw, and there is some ultra-obscure Norwegian or Swedish or some-such film from the 70s called I Fucked Jesus that is floating around as a terrible quality boot.
Speaking of Bunuel and French pornography, I see that his amazing last film, That Obscure Object of Desire is an adaptation of a Pierre Louys novel. Funny that no one ever did a xxx version of his Three Daughters pornographic novella.

^ Awesome, thanks!
It's funny, since I've started looking into this, it seems that the most obvious choices - i.e. the novels that are pornographic - don't get adapted as much as books that don't have explicit sexuality. I think porn movies like to have something to work with (read: pervert), and that's why they're busy adapting children's books and Shakespeare instead of Anais Nin. Though, if anyone is reading this, I would love to see a feature adapation of some of Nin's short stories.
Then of course, there's the fact that a lot of the stuff in porn lit would be illegal to film - I started looking for Marqui de Sade adaps, and quickly realised that a hardcore adap of something like Justine would probably be legally obscene, not to mention unwatchable. (There is Salo, of course, but that's not hardcore - still controversial, though).

I haven't seen The Image so I'll try to round that one up.
I watched a crummy version of Story of Joanna but I dug it anyway. Damiano considered Joanna superior to his earlier, less expensive Devil in Miss Jones and even cheaper Deep Throat. (or so he says on the commentary for DMJ)
Yea, I shudder at the thought of someone attempting something with Tropic of Cancer or Anais Nin's stuff, especially in today's crappy climate when it's safe to just parody anything and everything---T0M

A quick update on my adventures - I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (crazy book by the way), and watched the XXX musical (1976), which was tons of fun, and gave me a lot to think about. Then I read Through the Looking Glass, and watched the Jonas Middleton movie (also from 1976) - not an adaptation per se, but a "reimagining," if you will. An outstanding movie.
I highly recommend this as a double bill - Alice is jovial and light, while Looking Glass is really dark and eerie, but they go together really well.
I'm focusing on Victorian literature at the moment, so I think the Dorian Gray/Frankenstein/Dracula/Jekyll and Hyde/Dickens adaps will be up next.

You might want to check out The Erotic Dr. Jekyll, with Harry Reems then, ABA has it on DVD (it's part of the Zebedy Colt Vol. II collection) and I've seen the screen grabs from it and it looks unusually good in terms of image quality for them.

They ripped it off from VIDEO-X-PIX. VXP owns the rights and has released it on DVD.

Thanks John, I didn't realize VXP had put it out as well, their releases tend to be much better in quality anyway.

There was apparently a version of Apollinaire's Les Onze Mille Verges made, but, as I mentioned in that earlier post, I haven't been able to find it. If you do, please let me know!
I've looked all over for adaptations of the Marquis de Sade's works (for a chapter in my dissertation). There are a few, but they're all soft-core: several by Jess Franco, and a couple Japanese releases as well. I can post a complete list as soon as I get around to writing said chapter (hopefully sometime in the next few months). I'm a bit surprised no one made a real hardcore version of Justine or something back in the 70s (as you said, Salo is not porn). Although they're illegal in our enlightened 21st century, simulated rape, murder, and even scat appear in quite a few classic films.

^ Indeed. But I couldn't believe what I was reading when I read Justine, and I hear Philosophy of the Bedroom and Juliette have even more bizarre stuff - I just can't imagine it being possible to put that stuff on film.
Oh, and I read Belle de Jour over the last couple of days, and then watched V: The Hot One yesterday - amazing book, amazing film. It really impressed me. The only thing that didn't quite work, but is an interesting difference nonetheless, is that in the book of course it would be shocking for her husband to find out she were in a whorehouse, and she is tantalized by whoredom because the men are so unlike her upper crust, sweet husband. Whereas in V, her husband is all about swinging, and seems so open to things, that it seems odd that V would feel she should keep it a secret. Still, this just raises more interesting questions about differences in culture/era.
Of course, the endings are completely different too - I'm glad about that!
DAF - what's your dissertation about?

I'm writing on the reception of Sade's works, concentrating mostly on creative adaptions (literary or cinematic). I'm trying to link it all to the concept of obscenity (I'll start with the Sade trials and then bring up Max Hardcore et al. in my conclusion).
What about yours? (I love your blog, by the way!)

Wow, that sounds really interesting! I guess you've read Angela Carter's The Sadeian Woman? What's your take on that?
Mine's about pornographic adaptations/appropriations and the different ways pornography speaks back to the mainstream/exposes its hypocrisies, as well as refers to itself in a self-reflexive/critical way. Basically, porn as a postmodern medium and what it has to say about gender/sexuality in high and low art.
There's a professor I was in contact with a few weeks back who was looking for histories of pornography - he wrote his dissertation on French libertine writing, and I bet he would be a good contact for you if you needed one, in terms of ideas for texts etc. Just let me know and I'll email you.
