I was in NYC the other day browsing the DVD shops around 8th Ave., and was blown away by the huge number of beautiful girls posing for cover pics on the new DVDs. It was impossible not to pick them up and check the back of the DVD for actual action pics.
Unfortunately, the back pics were virtually all identical - pics of sweaty guys having sex with anonymous women and every DVD back looked the same.
I just couldn't buy any new stuff. They would be better off with more tease pics on the back and let imagination/mystery do the sell.

I think most of the boxcovers from high productions companies are fantastic. Particularly RLD, Elegant Angel, PXP and Anabolic/Diabolic.
I wouldn't say the back covers of any of them are messy and that the girls are anonymous. If you know your pornstars then you know which girls are which, I like to see some action shots on the back of a cover.
Anabolic and Third Degree covers are quite good in that they're double sided and have action shots on one side, and sexy lingerie type shots on the other side.
My favourite covers recently have been Brianna Love and Jada Fire on the cover of 'Blow it out your ass 2' and Aline on the cover of 'A2M #11' who looks sexy as hell on all fours with her ass in the air.
Bree Olson looks pretty damn hot on the cover of the latest 'Grand Theft Anal' from Zero Tolerance. Although I think her best cover shot so far was on 'Bore my Asshole #1' from RLD.
Nothing says romance like anal sex.

I think a mixture of tease and hardcore on the backs is good. I own over 500 dvds and you are right.... they all look the same. ya need hard on the back so you can get an idea of what the sex might look like. That way you don't end up buying shit. Been there done that... don't wanna do it again. Especially shitty compilations.
