I have recently begun to write reviews for ADT and I am finding myself watching every element to be found on the DVDs. I am also checking out websites to see what kind of trailers you can get to help me get a sense of what I might want to check out in the future. What I have found is a dramatic, almost polarized, differential between how companies market their product lines.
For instance, I have been a huge fan of Jules Jordan from the early days, and I have been satisfied with the attention he pays to most every detail I could hope for in a video. What I believe to be a huge asset in his longevity as a salesman, is his dedication to splicing together trailers that really capture the essence of what I can expect from a title. I get a taste of what the girls wearing, who she's paired with, a sense of the intensity level, and even a choice nasty moment. This makes me look forward to seeing, even saving money to buy a title when it's released. Sure, we can see boxcovers and know who's going to be in a production, but a 5-6 minute trailer that pieces 1-1 1/2 minute clips of each scene sells the content.
Conversely, there are companies that offer no trailers on their websites, or a handful that are 1- 1/2 minutes. These make me frustrated more than entice me, and I generally wait for reviews before I even consider renting, much less purchasing these titles. There may be aspects I don't understand such as legal issues or space to post these extras, but I am firmly convinced that their lack is significantly detrimental to the market value of these companies' products.
I'd like to highlight Evil Angel, Elegant Angel, Jules Jordan Video, and Digital Playground as companies that consistently provide extended trailers that really help push the appeal of upcoming and previously released titles. Maybe a customer had forgotten about BWA 9, though s/he read a review on ADT and checked out the price at a distributor. S/he sees a link to a trailer, and instead of considering to buy it for 20 some dollars, s/he says, "You know what, I'll pay an extra 5-6$ to see that flick - that looked hot!".
Looking for feedback that might be helpful to these companies, and this should not, I hope, be a forum to ask for free content on the web. Let's look at this from a business standpoint and maybe the pros can offer their two cents!!

We send out thousands of clicks to trailers daily. Our trailer links page draws tons of traffic. Any producer/director that thinks their movie is good should provide a trailer on the web.

Trailers definitely play a big part in what movies I buy. Seeing trailers on Digital Playground releases has sold me on many a title I otherwise probably wouldn't have picked up. Sometimes a girl I'm not familiar with will be in a title, but I won't think anything of it. Then I'll watch the trailer and see her and, "Oh my, who is that?"

MythMaker, I completely agree with you.
Evil Angel and Jules Jordan are the two companies I look forward to seeing their trailers. The trailers are the biggest motivating factor to buy or not, in my opinion.

Trailers and the reviews here have become for me the way I select what I buy, but especially the trailers.

I do like trailers, and I have to disagree with what Drew has written in another thread about questioning the wisdom of showing too much hardcore stuff in the trailers. I do want to know who's in it, what they are wearing, and what kind of sex they are having. But I also appreciate brevity. A two minute trailer that makes me want to see the movie that it is for is better than a six minute trailer that makes me want to see the movie that it is for. Because I don't think it should take a half hour to look at 5 or 6 trailers.
Steph, I have seen the trailers in individual movie's price search entries, but I had honestly never seen that page with all of the trailers on it.

Trailers definitely influence me when buying porn. You need to know what you're getting. It's not like buying a normal movie where you can tell what you're getting before hand.
I never get a movie unless: I know what kind positions and sex acts there are in it, I've seen some decent screenshots and that I've seen a trailer for it.
Evil Angel, Jules Jordan and Elegant Angel produce the best trailers by far and they have really influenced me into buying their product. Even though EA and JJ are a bit more pricey than some other videos. RLD's website is a bit better these days as they do put up screenshots and short tease trailers for most of their releases. Although I wish they'd cut out the wonky camera work.
Nothing says romance like anal sex.

The biggest problem with trailers is that they're usually only around a minute or so. It's pretty easy to glean a minute's worth of highlights from an average (or even a well below average) flick and make it look great. Naturally, they're gonna pick the cream of the crop for the trailer. The uninitiated will see the trailer and think "Wow! If the whole movie is this good, I'll have myself 2 full hours of prime jerkoff material!"
And then, they get it and they have a minute and a half of prime jerkoff material and 2 hours of snore inducing filler.

Having said that, trailers are still useful to get a general feel for what you're getting.

I've always liked the Sineplex trailers. I think they do a great job. I remember around 3-4 years ago a lot of studios like Red Light District would release special bonus discs with nothing but trailers on them. I remember seeing one trailer disc with around 50+ RLD trailers on it, that you can probably buy now for $5. Being fairly new to collecting DVDs, I basically went through that disc and picked out titles I liked, writing them down and bought them.
So I agree good trailers help but lately I find myself rarely watching trailers because they are in my opinion too good. I'll start watching them and think "damn I got to get that now". So I don't even want to know! Instead I just grab what sounds good as it comes along. And pick DVDs based on girls I follow.
