Sometimes in Five Star DVD I see dvds listed as 4 and even 8 hours for single titles, and I wonder - does the length include Everything (stills, commercials), or is it just for the film?

Depends on the studio. I would say that most covers specifically advertising the length would be including the length of all content including things like phone sex commercials. I would never make a purchase based on length, unless a reviewer provided the running time.

Remember, it's not the size of the ship. It's the motion of the ocean.

Video length on DVD does not care if you are talking about the movie or the extras. Video is video. What you need to be aware of is Bit Rate (read video quality).

Video can be encoded from bit rates ranging from 1-9. The higher the bit rate, the better the video quality, the better the picture looks.

Of course, the higher the bit rate, the more disc space it eats up. A single layered DVD is 4.7 gigs any way you wanna slice it up.

We, at VCA Interactive do not put anything over 129 minutes (including all motion menus, extras, etc...) on a single sided DVD. I would be cautious of any single sided disc much longer than 2 hours, if you care about quality.
