I can't believe I used to pay those prices before I discovered online mail-order sources. But there was always plenty of people in the shops paying 50quid for a Private DVD. Those prices are coming down now, though.

While there I thought I would visit a few shops to buy some not so easily purchased DVDs (for the UK). Two things really took my notice. 1) The lack of DVDs, most shops had masses of VHS videos (several hundreds), and a very limited selection of DVDs (50). And I visted around 10 shops. 2) The price. Although I was not looking for Private, I checked their prices for comparison and they were 65 - 80 Euros. EroDVD sell for between 20-24 Euro, and I have been buying mail order for around 11.50 pounds. Some German titles were selling for 35 Euros in a few shops. What a rip off. Paraglinder - the company you're referring to is Sheptonhurst, owned by David Sullivan (owner of Daily Sport and sometime owner of many of the expensive but low quality mags, e.g. Whitehouse), and a company and individual I must admit I have had something against for a number of years! Yes, he was instrumental in bringing legal action that eventually forced the BBFC to classify hardcore porn at R18, but it's no surprise to hear that Sheptonhurst are selling substandard gear again. Suffice to say that over the years Sullivan and his cronies have made more than a few quid at the expense of the British porn fan. I am afraid they have a history of offering "hard videos" from way back in the day when no such video could be legally sold in the UK, and they knew full well no-one could complain about it. Personally, given Private's reputation for quality and the the effort they put into production of their OWN discs, I cannot believe they sold UK rights to a company which has no commitment to quality or to giving the punters a good product, and a good deal. Seems like Sullivan isn't the only one who likes a quick buck rather than keeping customers happy. [Link] |
| timotei Member UK 271 Posts 4/02 | Posted - Jun 20 2002 : 7:02AM Also, I have noticed that (on my DVD player at least) some functions are "not permitted", such as A-B repeat or zoom or time-based-positioning... that's annoying, as the originals allow every function. I have a couple of Evil Angel DVDs on R18 version (Hardball 13 and Birthday Booty), and they were 19.95pounds each, with half-price trade-in. Picture quality looked as good as an imported one. BTW, these DVDs had a Harmony splash screen on the lead-in to the film. So yeah, R18s are much cheaper than the "real thing" in Soho, but some places are doing non-R18s for about 30quid or 2 for 50. Still cheaper to buy online, but then some people buying in Soho might not have that option. I don't go there much anymore, since I started buying online. [Link] |
