But just cause I can't believe it doesn't mean it's not so. Color me surprised.

But I was newer really able to back up my claims with any reliable sources. Now a good and reliable test is finally available and it shows that some cheap software based encoders can match the quality of a $25.000 piece of MPEG-2 hardware. ENCODER/TRANSCODER: - Cinema Craft Encoder CCE-SP HARDWARE-BASED ENCODERS: MPEG-2 Encoder Shootout - the scoreboard in pdf format The beauty of it all that you can to directly from DV to MPEG-2 to DVD in a pure digital workflow using a $500 MPEG-2 tool.

Evil Angel makes a copy of the DV movie on to a analog BetaSP because their DVD author uses a hardware encoder with a analog input. By doing so the digital production chain is broken. |

I'm sure you're familar with Zeno's paradox, and it's a good way to look at consumer grade gear vs. professional grade gear. 2 years ago, a $500 software only encoder was "good enough" for the masses, but really wasn't up to spec for professional work. Maybe it could have been made to work better, but my guess is that is would have work much more slowly than a dedicated black box. Same with cameras. You can get a lot for $3500. But if what you could get for $3500 was good enough for professional work, why would anyone ever spend $35K for a camera. In the case of encoders, I think the onboard horse-power of a modern system be sufficient that a black box doesn't make sense unless you're encoding a lot of material. A G5 processor can to inter-codec translations in real time that no black box from 3 years ago could dream of. (10 bit to DV, DV to 10 bit, etc.) But 5 years ago, the only way to get realtime analog to digital/digital to analog was with purpose built chips/boards. -T.C. |
