There is now at least one company offering a DVD-R duplication system capable of turning out 50 discs per hour from a DVD-R original. Such systems have come down in cost to the point that, especially for small runs, it is less expensive than preparing a master and going the pressed route. Of course, it is limited to single-layer operation but that is often not a limitation. Considering its cost and versatility, it makes sense for some releases. It also makes sense in terms of inventory control - run off the number needed for a particular order and you're done.

I'm not saying it is the best option - just that it exists. And, considering the options, it will continue to become a larger part of the commercial market.

That's too bad especially for those like me who have trouble with DVD-R's. My main player is an old JVC XV-511, which can't handle a DVD-R and my secondary player is a PS2 unit, which also can't handle them. The only player that I have that can is my computer, which is my least preferred way to watch a film. The bigger issue here that I'm seeing is that consumers that can't play them are ending up buying them. Excalibur doesn't state that their DVD-R's are such ever. They will only call them "Excalibur exclusive titles". VCX marks on their site that theirs are DVD-R's but apparently aren't informing the stores so the stores can inform consumers.
Plus the releases look cheap for the price they are charging. At least with the VCX title I ended up with, the top is marked with a poorly placed sticker and I felt ripped off when I saw it. Then the bigger issue hit with that title, my ROM rejected it. It would be one thing if an initial release was a DVD-R to pay for replicating costs of the next batch and was so marked for consumers that don't care one way or another. But VCX appears to be switching all of their lines except for Video-X-Pix to DVD-R. Especially since on the current list there are 10 titles that I want. I also wonder how long it will be until they switch the Video-X-Pix line over to DVD-R as well.
I hope you are wrong about more companies using it on the commercial market, but I fear that you are right. Thanks for the info on the replication system since I didn't realize they were coming down in price.

The discs from ZFX are DVD-R, so says the company.

DVD players have come down a lot recently. You can get one that plays DVD +/- R/RW and CDR/RW for less then 150, less if you wait for one of the big stores mail in rebate deals. Who knows at ebay. I realize its a pain to have to upgrade, but if the majority of consumers dont mind, then you'll have to go with the flow.
