sometimes I can see obvious scratches on my DVDs. But they seem to play fine and all. Othertimes, I see some scratches and the disc garbles the image or audio and sometimes locks up--which I attribute to the scratch/es. Anyone know why some scratches cause trouble and others don't?

Also, does anyone know why some DVDs have like gradations of color on the playing surface of the disc. Almost like sand swept up on a beach sort of thing. What causes this? Is this normal or a sign of disc problems to come?

hmmm, odd

in answer to your first question -

i guess some scratches are deeper than others, light scratches dont tend to affect playback, the laser wont really pick it up

i havent seen any dics this colour, so i cant really answer this 1

the colors are related to the dyes like phthalocyanine, cyanine, etc used by the manufacturer.

Does polishing the affected DVDs with some kind of accessory help diminish problems with scratches?

yeah, there are dyes, but not heard of a sandy coloured one.

So was it one colour originally ? and then changed to this sandy coloured one ?

dont use a duster what ever u do, it will scratch the DVDs up badlly.

just use a "lint free cloth" and gentlly start at the centre of the disc and go outwards, dont go "round" the disc

It is important to clean/polish a DVD radially (and a CD, too, for that matter). There is a really good product on the market called Plexus which works wonders on scratched discs. IT can be found at some automotive parts/supply stores and a variety of places online. (e.g., AutoGeek)

certain dyes often end up turning weird shades of brown/amber as they're exposed to sunlight/increased oxidation.
