sir wankalot Member UK 904 Posts 5/03	Posted - Mar 23 2005 : 1:04PM Some new dvds arrived the other day and when i turned them over i noticed they had a strange effect on their surface. They appeared to be covered in tiny silver dots as if sprayed with a very fine jet of water. My immediate reaction was that they had rubbed together in transit and had minute scratches on them. However, they all played perfectly (even on my fussy stand alone player). What causes this effect? Are these minute scratches? Edited for spelling Edited by - sir wankalot on Apr 14 2005 [Link]

Solid Member 180 Posts 5/04	Posted - Apr 10 2005 : 3:34AM I notice those weird cosmetic problems,but only on adult dvds,I've seen swirls,spots,also some seem more transparent than mainstream dvds,if you hold them up to the light you can see thru them to some extent.They play fine though. [Link]

jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04	Posted - Apr 14 2005 : 9:15PM if they're just on the surface, you should be fine-that layer doesn't contain any data and little nicks can actually be evened-out by buffing it with a very mild abrasive. try a little brasso, rub radially and they may come off very easily. Click to expand Aren't we suppose to clean dvds from the inner ring outwards. "Wipe the surface, starting at the center and moving outward to the edge. Wipe across the disc rather than in a circular motion, which can cause microscratches and damage the data stored on the disc". Also is any abrasive a good idea? "Never use household cleaners, abrasives or solvents on CDs or DVDs" I tried to wipe with it a wet tissue but this made no difference. My main concern is when i sell it on people will think it is in poor condition. [Link]
jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04	Posted - Apr 15 2005 : 4:18PM you're right about wiping outwards, that's what i meant by saying radially. you don't want to use harsh abrasives, but you want to get to the bottom of the scratch or warping then polish from there. stuff like brasso and micromesh work great, super-fine(2500 or finer) sandpaper or toothpaste also work.
