Yeah the culprit is almost always scratches on the dvd although I have seen a couple of dvd's that wouldn't play due to the manufacturer using some cheapo dvd's or something cuz when you put the shiny part up to the light you could right away see a cloudy look or uneven look and that is usually bad.
Can't remember specifically which company it was at the moment tho.
Only thing I notice with DVSX dvd's is that they pack alot into each of their dvd's so if you got an older pc/dvd maybe it can't keep up with the data rate although your computer dvd would have to be running with DMA off. I'd double check the dvd on a friends standalone dvd before passing judgement on particular dvd.
