No I'm not being facetious. The reason I say this is that by all definitions I'd say I'm addicted to net since I spend a majority of my time on net. Anyways this leads up to my personal observation that the whole internet just isn't what it was a year ago. I mean I would get on the web click on a page and it would come right up. Now it seems like every other day I click on a random webpage it'll take a couple of seconds to come up or it won't come up at all. Actually just a couple of minutes ago I tried to do a google search and it wouldn't even come up. I'm using cable modem and I have an opteron cpu with 2gig's ram so I doubt it's me. Is all this damn spam and viruses finally having an effect on the overall speed of the net? Also I'm constantly checking this page internet health report and seeing a lot more red lately whereas before it was always green. So in conclusion anyone else out there that uses the internet as much as me noticing any subtle effects I mentioned above or is it just "me"? p.s. also just posting on ADT sometimes takes forever or doesn't post at all  [Link] |

| jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04 | Posted - Mar 11 2004 : 12:32PM my speed improves a bit if i set the mtu=1500 you've got a ton of ram, and if you are caching files to disk all the time as you surf, you could install a virtual drive or ramdisk and change the location of the temporary internet files to that. writing to memory is a hell of a lot faster than to disk--you could easily create something 128mb or more, maybe it's worth a shot. i'm kinda inclined to agree with you and just blame paris hilton for slow page loads-good luck though-j [Link] |

So, as the cable company gets more subscribers to use their ISP service more connections are competing for a piece of the available bandwidth, meaning congestion can occur before you even get to the Internet; and 2) web sites continue to add graphics and flash content, which increase the page size, hence the download time. Regarding posting problems on ADT, Drew has mentioned that there is an issue with the servers he is aware of and working on. I believe the post is in Tech Talk if you want to do a search on it. You open! You open NOW!" They think that damn Pogo game requires my immediate attention to get their Java runtimes updated so they can fuck off all afternoon (and it becomes no wonder how I justify so much ADT time, natch). They won't run Windows Update or a firewall or a virus scanner or spyware blockers/removers, then wonder why their Internet connection is running so slowly. For all its vaunted value as a research and communication tool, between all the porn, games, jokes, viruses, worms and other bullshit littering the wire, I'd just as soon take a backhoe to every backbone from UUNet to SONAT as troubleshoot downtime. Oh...sorry. The routing tables are one of the worst bottlenecks. If not for multi-thousand dollar Cisco and Bay Networks and other high-end appliances, it'd go down in a heartbeat. You know what makes matters worse? I've dealt with so many ISPs that have one or two full-time technicians who know less about DNS (among other things) than I do, that it's a wonder any of this shit works at any given time. Before I convinced my employer to purchase an enterprise AV solution for our mail server I had a secretary call one of my desktop support guys because she was upset over not being able to install a screensaver. When he got there she was repeatedly clicking on "wicked screensaver.pif". I had the same issue with users refusing to run windows update. I ended up setting up a SUS server and using group policy to enforce updates. Every little bit helps. [Link] |
