I, for one, want to see as many classics on DVD as possible - classics, done well, that is. And iCandy is our best bet for making that happen.

Having loved Insatiable ever since I began watching porn (literally), I was pleasantly surprised to see such a great DVD version of this classic, produced by a small company, I-Candy. On the heels of such an overwhelmingly positive debut DVD, I-Candy is embroiled in something of a controversy over their latest release, Up N' Coming. Specificially, the final scene with John Holmes and Marilyn Chambers is incomplete because of an edited VHS master that I-Candy had purchased, not knowing that it differed from original release. Some have said they won't buy Up N' Coming because of the editing. I certainly can sympathize with that position--indeed, if it was any other DVD producer besides I-Candy, I would probably wouldn't have ordered this title, let alone placed my first adult DVD preorder for it. But I-Candy has demonstrated that they are devoted to giving truly classic films the treatment they deserve. I can think of several large studios that don't feel a responsibility to correctly remaster their classic titles, let alone offer the wealth of extras that I-Candy has included in their first two DVD releases. Even more disturbing than the Up N' Coming cuts (which I-Candy had no role in making) are the studios which wantonly and frequently butcher their library for DVD. Those studios are worse than DJs creating custom remixes as they re-edit and even rename their features as if they were being released for the very first time. And those studios get away with it, while I-Candy is singled out as a being either a censor or inattentive to detail, which is not fair. For those reasons, I decided to buy Up N' Coming even though it's not on my list of favorite Golden Age titles and despite the issue of the edited master. Some folks even suggested that I should cancel my pre-order, but I didn't even though I could have. I feel a personal responsibility to do my little part to support a production house that does DVDs the right way. And I ask, as one adult film lover to another, that if you enjoyed Insatiable that you consider supporting I-Candy (by buying Up N' Coming) so that they can continue to offer quality releases that force the adult DVD industry as a whole to improve their products. To be honest, I don't think I-Candy has an easy road ahead. While I'm sure that sales of Insatiable have been brisk, it's a double edged sword. Obviously, when you release the number one movie of all time (in my book at least) as well as they did, the expectations for future releases are going to be very high. And, frankly, based on the list of upcoming projects, nothing is going to eclipse Insatiable. So I-Candy will have to do more with less, which makes it all the more important that we support their noble efforts with our credit cards and checkbooks. It would be a tragedy if I-Candy had to close their doors, because very few studios are willing to go through the effort that these folks do. To Mara Epstein and I-Candy: Hang in there! We know that it's not your fault. It's a shitty deal and it's not fair, for sure. But I think many of us really are desperately looking for quality DVDs like the ones you've put out so far. My fellow connoisseurs and I have every desire to see you succeed and will do all that we can to support you toward that goal. I'm really pissed about this too and they should have ensured that they were getting a real copy of the movie if they're going to tout themselves as a classics reissue DVD company. Now the true shame in this is that there probaby will never be a subsequent re-release with that scene intact in the movie. This movie has been on my want list, glad I didn't buy it. I Candy got duped. that's their fault. Subterfuge is the rule in porn commerce. They're naivete hopefully bloodied their nose enough to be more savvy from here on out Thank god for groups like this and RAME to prevent customers from getting ripped off. By shilling this disk in such a way, aren't you in your manner perpetuating this fraud that you feel that was unfairly burdened upon I Candy? don't you think that people who maybe haven't watched this video in fifteen years and have a DVD player now who would buy this are gonna get this home and watch it and say, "Where is the John Holmes/Marilyn scene". they're gonna feel ripped off. In a nutshell, I-Candy relies on the revenue brought in by the previous releases to pay the up-front costs of producing the next DVD. There's no big pile of money sitting around as a buffer against something like this, and certainly no money to spend on recalls or stickers. I'm sure that I-Candy would if they could. That means that it's a little more serious than a bloody nose here. It's fine to take the indignant high ground and do the Monday morning quarterbacking so long as you understand that I-Candy isn't your typical DVD producer. I can't believe how some people won't crucify the established producers who regularly pawn off inferior DVDs but will go out of their way to nail a newcomer who made an honest mistake. As far as being more careful in the future, you bet they're going to be more careful. And they aren't going to be as naive. It's been a "school of hard knocks" lesson for I-Candy. I just don't see what constructive purpose is served by rubbing their nose in it. I come from the school of thought that says that you should encourage children when they make mistakes because they don't know any better. Conversely, once they grow up, you don't cut them the same slack because they should know better by then. I-Candy is a child in my book. I resent the implication that I condone the Up N' Coming edit or that I'm supporting any type of fraud. I'm simply saying that I-Candy's future depends on their sales now. Without the revenue, there may not be a next time. Because of that (and the fact that the DVD is done very well aside from the edited scene), I'm willing to buy the Un'C DVD. For those who don't mind the abrupt ending to the movie, it's a well-done disc. If it does bother you, that's fine--maybe you'll buy a copy of Insatiable instead (if you haven't already done so). Ironically, we were contacted by iCandy about the very issue I quoted above. If you (or anyone else) is expert enough in this area we would like to hear from you. We would like to help make sure that this type of thing doesn't happen again at iCandy or any other studio striving to put out quality DVDs.
