In the little bit of production I've done, which is small scale, I tend to aim for as natural a performance as possible. Positions sometimes need to be done in a certain way for the camera, but I'd want performers to experience and express pleasure naturally. For me, that was a certain mood on set, a small set, as few people as possible, and most importantly the right performers. My aim would be one continuous scene and I'd hold up posterboard signs to indicate or suggest position changes. I'm not formally trained in filmmaking by any means though have a background in the arts and like an artist tend to do whatever it takes to get to the output I envision.

In more established porn production businesses, to be sure, not every scene is intended to be a natural performance as I described above. Some scenes are parody, some focused on athletics, some focused just on the physics and beauty of the image, etc. But some scene are for sure intended to be "natural". I'm curious how production houses accomplish that. Things that those directors do to elicit a natural performance. Are there things that can be done to elicit a natural performance from just about any performer?
