Just started watching Asian Fucking Nation 4 and there is a Evil Angel watermark in the right bottom corner.
Tricia, is this the new norm?

"Copy" doesn't necessarily mean "illicit".
If the Evil Angel factory cranks out 5000 dvds of a given title, for distribution throughout the world, that's 5000 copies, all clean and legal.

Agreed.
I use the word "copy" for DVDs, CDs, etc. ... and I am not talking about bootlegs.

Really? Watermarks are hardly noticeable imo. Can you blame them for trying to protect their director's content?

Yes, because a) it's useless anyway and b) they are punishing legit customers not the pirates by doing this.

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has a watermark!

According to some of the thoughts in this thread, it may not be useless to the companies to watermark DVDs.

As long as the watermarks aren't overbearing -- which occurs from time to time on Iron Cross discs from Teravision -- I don't mind the watermarks.
With the Vivid movies that have them, I hardly notice that they're there. Often, when writing up a review, I have to go back and double-check that one was there before mentioning it.

Interesting.
I always just thought that it was a vain attempt at directing traffic to their websites. It makes a lot more sense now that there is a purpose beyond that.
In all honesty, I think that it's a good idea for a company to do so that it can protect itself in as many ways as possible.
(Again...as long as it doesn't ruin the final product...)

Vince Voyeur movies have watermarks now also. They don't appear 100% of time
which is an improvement over how cable channels do it.
They do appear doing the scene in the lower corn and then they fade out.
It's obviously being done to counter online video clip sites.

I find it disappointing that Evil Angel is now watermarking their DVDs. I find watermarks to be distracting, some more then others. I've noticed on recent DVDs that Vivid Video has also started watermarking their DVDs. Vivid's watermark is the most distracting to me. On tube sites, I rarely see a watermark for Vivid Video. I sent Vivid's Howard Levine several emails with lists of Batman XXX A Porn Parody tube links. I don't recall once seeing a watermark on any of the tube links for Batman XXX. I own over 20 Vivid DVDs but not Batman XXX, so I don't know if the Batman XXX DVD has a watermark on it or not.
Unfortunately, movie companies that watermark movies are making tube sites more appealing because most uploaders take out the watermark. I don't know if they do this by cropping or using some technology that takes out the watermark. Video X Pix is another company that uses watermarks. A good thing about them is that they don't use the watermark through most of the running time of their movies. I would prefer if they did not use a watermark at all but having it on some of the time is better then all of the time.
It amazes me how much stuff stays up on tube sites. This is even the case for companies that hire anti-piracy services. I'm sure that the anti-piracy services take down many tube site links and torrents. I can see proof of this by seeing tube site links that say deleted. Even though there are many things deleted, there is still stuff that stays up for many months.
I don't know if anti-piracy services are not being thorough enough or if tubes are ignoring DMCA notices. There are tube sites that can be blatant about the source of a scene. There are many times that scenes and whole movies are identified by the title of the movie. Even when a title is not used, you can identify the cast members and use iafd to figure out which movie the scene is from.
It is especially easy to figure out Belladonna movies because the tube sites mostly use Belladonna scenes from Evil Angel movies. Once you know the words that a tube site is using, you can check for the words on other tube sites affiliated with the one you discovered. It is frequently the case that the same words are used on multiple sites.
Mike South had an article in which he mentioned that there was a lot of content from Evil Angel movies on tube sites. Christian Mann responded to Mike South by telling him about what Evil Angel does to fight piracy. In June, I sent Tricia Devereaux a list of over 400 tube links of Evil Angel movies. It took me about a week to compile the list. Several other times previously, I sent Tricia emails that listed tube site links. There is obviously a problem of tube sites putting up scenes again that they took down because of DMCA requests. The thing is that I noticed many tube site links that were not put up recently. They had been up since a long time ago.
One of the things that Mike South got wrong in his "Piracy It's Still A Problem But Some Studios Suffer More Than Others" article is that he claims that when it comes to Digital Playground, "You won't find their titles on the tube sites, they get removed almost immediately and I mean within minutes." His statement is wrong. Digital Playground has got many things removed quickly but there still have have been scenes of theirs on tube sites for many months. Also according to Mike South, "You also don't see anything from Vivid or from Hustler." This is also now true either. Most of the Vivid Video content has been disappearing over the last few month months but there is still a lot of Hustler movies on tube sites.

Could be worst. The girls could begin the scene in evil angel tee shirts like some websites do. Have evil angel poster or something over the bed. Or even evil angel temp tats on the girls. Nascar meets porn.

I agree with everyone that doesn't like watermarks on their dvd but I'll take the watermark over no porn at all. It's a fact that studios loose money every day from porn piracy. If the watermarks help to slow or stop that then I'm all for it. Like some have suggested. It's possible to have the watermark in a lower corner and that it be appearing and disapearing during the scene.

I'd take those options over watermarks any day. The choice isn't even close.

It doesn't. I was surprised by it when I was reviewing it, as the vast majority of Vivid releases do...but this one did not.
Great movie, btw.
