With drives exceeding 4 hex even minor imperfections in the disc become critical.
In some cases the front of the drive was blown off and the shards came flying across the room.

I was just making a copy of one CD-R to another and the source disc exploded in the Toshiba Samsung DVD drive. I started it going and left the room to let Mrs Oatmeal play Mahjongg. A few minutes later I heard a loud snap noise three rooms away with the TV on. She just about dropped a load in her pants. I don't know if the disc was warped and broke coming out of if the laser did something freaky. Regardless my new Dell 8400 is one piper down. The DVD drive is filled with debris and sounds like a rattle. Anyone want to buy a used DVD drive? AS IS I wonder if the warranty covers this? Edited by - oatmeal on Oct 28 2004 [Link] |

The piece in the photo was the last piece to come out. Now it can open and close. The drive probably still works but the cd did't just explode into solid pieces like in the photo. It blew the two layers apart and littered the insides with metal flakes. I'm afraid it's a shock or fire hazard and have taken it out. Dell is mailing me a replacement to install. The first tech support guy sounded like he was in Russia (unconfirmed) and wanted me to try a couple of other things. Like what? "The drive is filled with bits of plastic and metal and sounds like someone eating captain crunch cereal?" The second tech support guy I talked to was in India (confirmed). Freaky thing. I had never heard of that happening before. [Link] |

Ah, but some days I pine for the good old days of the 98 OEM Preload floppy and a CD-R of 98 SE CD...just walk away. 98SE was my favorite; know why? You could take a hard drive out of a PC, put it in another PC, boot it up and 98 would go "Holy shit! Look, new stuff! New motherboard, new controllers, hell, look at all this new stuff, hang on while I load it up" -- and long as you had the drivers for the rest, man, you were golden . The Dell I'm manning at this moment has bombed TWICE on the XP SP2 load (can't FIND the FILE? WHAT??? It's right where you extracted it -- look I can SEE THE MOTHERFUCKER, there it is- RETRY RETRY RETRY BANG BANG BANG -- [throw things] - ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!), ...and I refuse to reload it. It's doing some serious flaky shit now. Won't burn CDs any more, for one thing. Browses fine, though, obviously. Break time over. *SIGH* Glad to hear you're getting a replacement. Did you say Russians?? I bet their diabolical plan is to get CDs to explode so they can get the drives and load them up with stolen Iraqi explosives and ship 'em back to Dell to sabotage our factories and ... [Link] |

Definitely take Kperv advice and move the tower to underneath the desk or in a cabinet. you can always buy a cheap fan at Wal-Mart and blow air towards the tower for more cooling. [Link] |

PCWorld has an article about that this month and how 75% installed it correctly and the rest had minor to major problems. They said Zone Alarm caused a fair amount of problems, particularly older versions. Spyware caused a few problems too, get Spybot - Search & Destroy I've always found XP to be pretty good if you have a legal copy. I gave my old PC with the pirated stuff away so someone else can have the headache of pre SP1 XP. That's right, I'm legit... 2 legit 2 quit. Still, Microsoft should lower the price on XP. The company I'm pissed with now is Symantec. They tried to chisel me out of a rebate. I had to lay Kami beating on them (actually no, I sent one polite email and they changed their stance) [Link] |

It was in the car! It installed on my laptop swimmingly. I actually scan for spyware fairly regularly with Spybot and Adaware and Agnitum Tauscan. I've got CA eTrust on the office network and I'm thinking about ordering their new security "whatchamacallit" suite since they bought PestPatrol. I think I'll try loading SP2 off the CD before I go formatting anything. Ye gads, a reload on this system would take two days! [Link] |
