That said, I'm more tempted to do it for a pricier hardware item. At least if they have a recall due to some design defect (e.g., potential fire hazard from AC adapter), they have the information to drop me a note.

I generally don't like them because of the wait in processing the rebate and receiving a cheque. Plus you're taxed on that amount instead of the discounted price. The only problem I've had was when Symantec tried to weasel out of a rebate (off a downloaded version) saying I didn't submit a proof of purchase. I filled everything out properly the first time so I resubmitted the claim and they approved it. [Link] |

I'm very careful to provide exactly what they ask for and sometimes more. Of the 5% when it was rejected, I was able to still get the rebate after some wrangling with the rebate company and/or contacting the mfgr. about the problem. Every time it was rejected, it was something bogus on the rebate processor's part. One thing to watch for is when there are multiple rebates and they all require original receipts. -- Snowman [Link] |
