As Porn Scout said, USB 3.0 would be good to have even if you don't need it right now. Chances are it will come in handy in the future. |

I did not vote for John McCain and I do not listen to Rush Limbaugh. I feel I have no candidate to vote for this next November who best represents me. My favorite comedian is Lewis Black and John Cusack is one of my favorite actors. I'm a Los Angeles Laker fan. I believe in no new taxes, no new laws, a strong military, conservative spending and I could give a shit less about foreign policy when our backyards are so fuckin dirty. I believe in the right to own as many handguns and rifles as one should so choose, I believe in the death penalty, I'm a big fan of The Duke and I hate Bill Maher. I'm guessing it's this second portion of my beliefs which the powers that be find to be so distressing. :) |

Don't know anything about their politics though... |

The guy I took it to says the little controller boards inside are the weak point, and they often fail. On the other hand, I gave a close relative the same thing for her computer, and it works perfectly. It's been well over a year. So go figure. I recently bought an external Seagate and it's been running fine (about 3 months). |

| jayo All-Star Member 2117 Posts 7/04 | This is a touchy spot with me. I paid for the drive so I'm out that. I opted to try to get the data rescued, which required breaking it out of the housing, which violated the warranty. They couldn't do it so I was out the money spent to attempt it. Then I bought a housing and the hard drive failed after a new low-level, partition and reformat, so I'm out that, too. (Though in theory I could use the housing for something else). It was a bad experience all the way 'round. |

| norrinradd Member 55 Posts 10/11 | I've had good luck with WD My Books but my 3TB crashed. Externals are basically hard drives in an enclosure and if it fails u can just remove it and put it in a new enclosure. Unfortunately I couldnt find a new enclosure for my 3TB so it was a total disaster. I've had other externals or even my desktop die and I've usually been able to recover all the data from the disks. Most of the time the enclosure breaks, not the drives. As my library grew I just got more externals but ran out of usb ports + you'll need a power cord for each so I had a cable nightmare. Lo and behold out came enclosures that could hold multiple hard drives. I bought a startech enclosure that can hold 4 ordinary drives yet it only has 1 usb & 1 power cord. U can pop drives in and out which is helpful if u want to consolidate or you get a new computer but want to keep the content from your old drive. So far the only downside is the fan can be a little noisy. Organizing 7TB of porn is a different story but at least I have it accessible on one computer. |

The USB 3.0 >500GBs ones are great. Stay away from LaCie drives. Had massive failures and lost lots of data that took me a week to recover (GetDataBack is life saver BTW) across 3 different LaCie drives (all 3 failed). |

| RandomPrecision Senior Member Enjoy! 8175 Posts 3/06 | I also have a 1 TB WD Mybook that I bought at Costco maybe 3 years ago. It's been going along just fine. I even took it apart out of curiosity and it went back together pretty easy. I think (but can't remember for sure) that I even put the drive in my tower for a couple of days so it is, apparently, just an internal drive in the Mybook case.
