My computer doesn't have firewire port, and I'm wondering if I can buy an external drive with a firewire port, and just download/digitize from my camera to that. I hat to be so technologically illiterate, but it is what it is...

To my knowledge there is no camera that can see an external hard drive to download to it on it's own, you still need a computer.
Are you talking a video camera or a digital photo camera (yes I know the distinction is very blurry now).
Are you trying to see things as you shoot them?
I routinely hook my card reader into my external drives but can see them on my computer is that what you are trying to accomplish?
If so then it would be a simple matter of getting an external drive that has both Firewire and USB connections (I prefer lacie or iOmega) and then run your camera to the external HD.

Also there are USB+firewire combination hubs.
It plugs to you computer's USB port and makes available additonal USB ports and firewire ports to which you can connect your camera.

Good tips, I think I've settled on Pinnacle Movie Box, a firewire to USB hub that also comes with user friendly software. Thanks again, anyone wanna suggest a good place for me to become more techno/compu literate in general? A friend suggested I take a computer science course, but I'm not so sure...

It's not clear to me what you're looking to do, but if you're looking to automate the workflow of getting photos from your camera to your laptop (?) have you considered a wifi SD card for your camera? eye-fi allows you to automatically/wirelessly move photos from your camera to your laptop or a long list of network locations (including Costco Photo :-) automatically. The photo files show up on your laptop within a minute after you take the photo, and it all happens without you doing anything. When you're done with your shoot, the photos are already on your laptop or NAS or wherever you want them to be.
