They do not come up in the menu under My Computer. The cable connecting them to my computer has the same connections as the cable I use to charge my MP3 player. When I hook up my MP3 player to that cable my computer reads it. Do I have any hope of getting all the stuff I have stored on my hard drives off of them or am I fucked? [Link] |

Is it a laptop computer or a desktop computer? Some laptop computers provide insufficient power (the current is too low) at the USB ports to operate some external HDDs. If that is the problem in your case, a possible solution is to use a powered USB hub, which is a USB hub with an external power supply which you plug to an AC wall socket. Another solution is get a combination USB cable which allows you to combine the power of 2 USB ports on your computer. It's called a 2-into-1 or Y-cable or something. Or if it is not a power problem, it might be a configuration problem which is preventing your computer from recognizing the external HDD's. [Link] |

Paid a guy to recover it and couldn't get anything (I just paid him for his time to try). I quit buying WDs. A shame--I used to really like them. I'd try them on another computer first. A friend's, one at work--something, anything. If they aren't recognized on that computer either, then you'll have to look into data recovery services. Just because the computer can't recognize it doesn't mean the data are gone. It's possible something like the allocation table got scrambled, and data recovery can rebuild it. If there's a physical problem--something broke inside, then you're toast. But since it happened to two different drives, the physical problem seems unlikely. You'd think if something electrically blew out the drives, it would hose your computer as well. [Link] |
