Hi to all,

As I am a great fan of the movie ZAZEL (for me it's the best movie i've ever seen), who can advise me a movie in this style (beautiful colors, mystic musics, pornstars artisticly maked up) ?

Many thanks !

Yeah, I also like eg the orchid, that turns out to be a pussy.

1. Blue Dahlia (also by James Avalon with Dahlia Gray)
2. Decadence (by Andrew Blake with Anna Malle)
3. other movies by Andrew Blake
4. movies by Michael Zen, like Sex 1&2, Latex, Shock.

definately 1.

Bye, Hamburger

Sorry for my mistakes. I don't know where, but somewhere Zazel was listed as directed by James Avalon. And sorry Confusing Ninn with Zen. Both directors can be recommended anyway.

Most important: These titles are what I meant...

Bye, Hamburger.

Nope. I've met Phillip. This is the only porn movie he ever shot. He was (might still be) a mainstream cameraman. He's Persian.

Consider yourself lucky that Zazel was ever made at all. The stars were aligned for one brief porno moment. Mond started a sequel years later but with the near-constant upheavals at Metro, nothing ever came of it. To me, it remains the best movie ever made in this genre, period.

James Avalon has made many great films over the years and Andrew Blake is the undisputed master but Zazel has an intangible quality that I've yet to see since.

Just my 2 cents.

I thought he was a Dutch photographer?

I also remember reading he shot some videos before he shot Zazel . Might have been softcore work for Penthouse, but I don't remember exactly.

There may be a Dutch photographer with the same name. With respect to Zazel, it's a stage name.

Drew, I know it's stage name. I also remember reading an interview in which another name was given too.

Another interview appeared in AVN some years ago and it contained pictures of another video he shot before Zazel . It was quite obvious that the angel scene was 'rehearsed' as it were in the older video.

Just remembered, one of the softcore videos he did for Penthouse before Zazel was titled Sasha: Centerfold . It starred Zazel star Sasha Vinni.

He worked as a photographer for Penthouse as well in the 90s.

Hey bigdar,

Here's a little more news for you if your still watching this thread grow....

I'm not 100% sure what foriegn land Phillip Mond hails from (it's either Holland or South Africa), but he is basically a good still photographer that put together a few films that had some amazingly hot girls and interesting sets. The only reason Zazel is so notable is purely because of James Avalon's editorial work on this particular Mond project. Avalon worked as an editor for none other than classic pornographer Gregory Dark (now a mainstream music video director). He excels at this stage of the filmmaking process and, after a long period locked in his editing bay, managed to make sense of Mr Mond's huge pile of tapes.

To see porn more like Zazel, I suggest either acquiring more of Avalon's work or as other's suggested, Andrew Blake. Regretfully these types of projects require a lot of money to produce and most of the industry prefers to churn out the next inexpensive gonzo title which from a business standpoint shows a quicker and better return. However, as many of these posts are showing...people are growing tired of the extreme sameness of gonzo and are looking, like you, for other types of more erotic/fantasy based fare with a lot more production value.

I loved the movie when I saw it at the end of the 90's. The photography was beautiful and the women were casted well. The movie really came through with ambience and as much aural stimulation as theatrical.

Zazel was a near masterpiece...severely tampered by the artificial flames in the final scene.

As others have suggested, Andrew Blake films should appeal to fans of Zazel. A believe that High Heels is the only DVD I gave a 5 star review. If it weren't for those damn flames, Zazel may have garnered the same.

Penthouse released a DVD of The World of Philip Mond. It is not hardcore, but you may enjoy it if you really appreciate his visual style.

As far as I know, "Zazel" was the 3rd feature Philip Monde shot. The first two were for Penthouse, and they didn't know what to do with them. The editing was un-inspired. While working freelance at Penthouse, I happened to see the raw footage. I told one of the producers there that if I edited this kind of footage, I could create a classic.

End of that year, Metro called and said they had about 20 hours of footage Monde shot, no script, and needed an editor. I said okay. I spent about 3 months working on it. A lot of the footage I slo-mo'd because his camera work wasn't very smooth. And I had to piece together the good parts, so I cut back and forth, to get around bits of the footage that weren't working. But the visuals, girls and costumes were extraordinary. I also designed the music, which I felt had to match the visuals -- exotic and colorful. The owner of Metro hated the music, and said he wanted pop music instead. I pretty much laughed at that, and told him that he'd ruin the movie with that kind of a sound track. The original music that Philip Monde sent over was sort of a repetitive techno-punk.

The flames were originally intended by Philip Monde. I had a version with and another without, thinking that if he saw it with the flames, he'd hate it. He loved it, so I left them in.

As for the other two Monde features, I think that they could have been equally as great as Zazel. Especially the one with the "Barbarian" female warriors.

The sequel turned out to be one scene with an "alien" like set, and a girl-girl scene with an "alien" dildo. It was not very impressive, and there was talk of me shooting the sequel. I was all for it, but I told them I needed to match the sets and costumes of the original, and when they saw the budget I put in, they got cold feet. I still have the script. I wanted to do a fable where the female lead is accidentally killed in a Mexican cantina, and travels through the various states of nature: through the air with Pegasus, underwater where she has sex with a man-fish, underground where she's raped by a band of demons etc.

But no companies have that kind of vision or courage anymore. So I doubt that anything like that or another Zazel will be coming out any time soon. It's too bad because this industry needs a good shot in the arm with high-production, creative erotic entertainment. And it's just not getting it.

Just a tip of the hat to Mr. Avalon...

Your "Les Vampyres" as well as "Darkside" were exceedingly well done and so enjoyable....Bravo...

I am a Creative Director, who began in this biz in the '70's and couldn't agree with you more..

Look forward to your next projects!

Seconded. Les Vampyres is probably my favourite adult movie outside of the Golden Age and I'm very pleased to see James posting here.

Thanks for the support. Les Vampyres was a lot of fun to make, and its origin was very, very strange. I'll be at the Red Light booth at Vegas. If any of you are at the show, drop by for a chat.

I'm also really pleased to read from James Avalon himself here. As I put in the Zazel DVD recently I found the reason, why I confused you with Philip Mond: Because your name also appears in the title sequence. As you told us, as the editor.

And in the DVD Releases section of the DVD, what trailers did I find besides the already recommended Blue Dahlia? Red Vibe Diaries (Object Of Desire). Still missing in my collection.

Bye, Hamburger.
