Women's sex aid gets official backing
The American government apparently wants women to have more fun in bed.
The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the Eros CTD, the first prescription device designed to help women with sexual dysfunction problems.
Remember the vacuum pumps sold to help men achieve erections? The Eros works on the same principle: it helps pump blood into the genital area.
Sexual health experts were delighted at the news of the approval. "This is a one of a kind," said the FDA's Dr. Diane Mitchell.
"For us, this is a great breakthrough," said Dr. Ira Goldstein, a urologist and leading sexual dysfunction researcher at Boston University. "It's the beginning of, hopefully, a plethora of therapeutic devices and drugs that we will have available for women who suffer personal distress with these problems."
Some might say "It's about time"; others are thankful women's sexual problems have now received a kind of official recognition. Women have been mostly left behind in the drive to help the estimated 30 million men over the age of 40 who suffer from various forms of erectile dysfunction, said Colin Pollard, head of the FDA's obstetrics and gynecology branch.
For men there are pills, pumps, implants and even creams that have been clinically proven to help. And from what experts are saying, the medical community is beginning to investigate whether these approaches might also work for women, Goldstein said.
Low Risk, High Gain
Made by Urometrics, a small, privately owned company in St. Paul, Minn., the Eros was approved through a new and simplified process after reviewing a study of 25 women who used it.
There weren't a lot of hurdles because there are few safety concerns about the product. "We felt the risk profile on [the Eros] is very low and the effectiveness angle straightforward," Pollard added.
In the study, presented by the manufacturer, 15 women suffered from sexual dysfunction. Seven reported that the device improved their ability to achieve orgasm, 12 said it increased their sexual satisfaction and all 15 reported improved sexual sensations.
Of the 10 women the researchers classified as normal, four said it aided them in achieving orgasm and four said it produced improved sexual feeling.
Doctors say as many as 50 percent of U.S. women complain they have problems enjoying sex after they go through menopause. Their problems often have to do with decreased blood flow to the genital area - the same physical problem that underlies many cases of erectile dysfunction.
"Female sex arousal disorder is a multifactorial problem," Mitchell said. "I think it is really important to understand that there is no panacea out there for women with sexual dysfunction. For some women, this device will work very well."
