This is pretty much impossible to diagnose without access to your computer and/or the files in question.

It's entirely possible that your computer is suffering from some sort of performance degradation, perhaps due to recently installed software. This could be anything from a new operating system to device drivers to malware (unbeknowst to you).

Or it could be a problem with a physical component like a controller chip or a failing drive, even a loose cable.

You'll need to analyze this in a methodical, deliberate manner. If you are unable to do this yourself, you're better off finding someone in your area who can.

There are probably individuals here who could give you step-by-step instructions on the dozens of tests necessary to diagnose your problem, but it might take ten times longer to do it this way.

In any case, good luck, you will need it.

Yes, this has happened to me with .mpg files as well. Are you by any chance running Quicktime Player under Mac OS X?

try putting the program from memtest.org on a floppy and running it. that sounds like bad RAM corrupting data, testing for it would be the first thing i'd suggest.

I doubt this is the cause of your problems.

I have been running QuickTime Player on OS X for over three years and I have never had any movie files corrupted.

This always happens to me as well with large .mpg files, just asking because all I ever use is Quicktime Pro on Panther...

Well I'm running OS X Panther as well, both QuickTime 6.5.x and now QuickTime 7.x. I have movie files over 100 megs.

Maybe you have RAM problems too. I know I don't have RAM-related errors. My iBook has 256MB and it starts to page heavily under certain conditions.

When I'm working normally, I'm pretty much using all of the available memory. If I had a bad memory stick, I would have seen the problems three years ago.
