My guess is that you'll see more applications that support JPEG 2000 once/if the patent situation gets resolved.

With ever improving network speeds, the issue of smaller file sizes becomes less and less importance, particularly for still images. Still image compression technology is rather moribund. The digital photography industry is probably tracking Moore's Law, so cameras get higher resolution, but media becomes larger and cheaper. The vast majority of image compression improvements are being put into video compression, notably for small wireless devices such as cellphones. MPEG-4 is where the action is happening, not JPEG 2000. [Link] |
