Try some different roads If you're trying to make porn for the right reasons (What I consider to be the right reasons) you're doing it because you think most of the people doing it now are doing it (Mostly) wrong. So to repeat an awful cliche (but a basic truth) you need to think outside the box. You can learn the basics from the people who have made tons of bad porn but the danger is that you'll fall into the same comfortable rut they did when you achieve some measure of success and find some reliable ways of making money (You have to make money somehow if you're going to do this seriously). People rub off on you. If you spend a lot of time around people who make typical porn for a living, you'll probably make typical, average, samey porn. You've got to be willing to break the rules (Not the law, though. Just to be clear) but at the same time, you have to realize that this is experimentation and it can go well or it can go very bad. For example, you might cast some girls who look nothing like any girls you've ever seen in porn and that might make your porn "pop" (I hate that term but it works) in a very good way if you can avoid the pitfalls (Which you can't avoid them every time anyway). But the thing is that if you're just starting out, you can't really afford to be bland in an industry that's so full of people scrabbling for whatever they can get. You're taking chances either way and you'll probably lose big time no matter what you do but do you really want to just make boring porn or would you rather take a chance and do something exciting? When I think "Amateur" I don't think about the girls I see in most of the so-called "amateur" porn and I definitely don't think about the movies I see them in. I think about average looking girls who don't look like porn stars and who definitely don't act like typical porn stars. This seems to be hard for directors looking for "girl next door" types because no matter where you find them or where they come from or what they look like, they all seem to think they have to look and act like porn stars in order to be in porn. This, of course, makes them exactly like every other "porn chick" on the planet and therefore BORING. They all seem to gravitate in that general direction after they've made a few flicks so it makes your job even harder. You have to find willing girls who have done almost no porn and won't mimic the women they've seen in porn. The fact is that I shy away from a lot of porn that's labeled as "Amateur" for a wide variety of reasons but mostly because what you usually get is the same old boring directors directing semi-fresh talent who may have already been in 50 "amateur" porn flicks. The appeal that amateur carries and the potential that it has is in being something very different than what you get if you just grab the latest Vivid flick or whatever (No disrespect meant to Vivid). And shooting amateurs is one of the riskiest things you can do unless you are very experienced with doing a good background interview. I had a client here in California that shot an amateur 18 year old that ended up being the niece of a local Sherriff's deputy. Needless to say, the other deputies saw her on his site and posted the pics of the niece doing porn on his locker. An investigation was quickly opened and my client decided to abandon his website and lost his initial $30,000 investment rather than undergo a police investigation. Stay safe. [Link] |
