willywilly Member Activated Member 662 Posts 2/05	Posted - Oct 21 2006 : 2:26PM I have an old version of Firefox - 1.0.7 . Is 1.5.0.7 the version most of you are using? I saw the thread about Firefox 2, and I think I'll wait out the beta. If 1.5.0.7 is what is in use by everyone now, I might as well go ahead and upgrade to that. Other question: Tools->Options->Advanced->Software Update Clicking the Check Now button, FF appears to go out and check, but replies that there are no updates. Is there something more to getting it to update itself? [Link]

If not, it may be that 1.0.x can't auto-update itself to 1.5.x. Make a backup of your bookmarks, and maybe a list of the extensions you're running if you don't think you'll be able to remember all of them, then go to getfirefox.com and download the latest 1.5.x. I'm not sure if it will install in addition to the 1.0.x, or offer to remove 1.0.x for you, or tell you that you have to manually uninstall 1.0.x before you can proceed to install 1.5.x; just run the install program and see what happens. It's hard to explain what I'm trying to say here, but the BEST method of backing up FireFox is this: Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\%username\Application Data or click on Start -> Run and type %APPDATA% Then just right click the Mozilla folder, click copy and then go some where and paste it. Or you could even open up a burning program and save the files that way. That's all you need to do to back it up. Simple and MUCH more effective as it will save EVERYTHING you have in FFs - Bookmarks, passwords for sties (if you keep them stored), your history (at the time of backup) and most of all, your plugins in tact! There are a couple websites that I like to read, that I've just gotten in the habit of being careful not to open many tabs at the same time. If I do, eventually system will lock. Sometimes mouse can still be moved, but usually not. But nothing clicks - can't change windows, can't do anything else. Usually Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't even work. This was true with Netscape. Used it for a long time. Tried it with FF 1.0.7 one time - opened a bunch of tabs, just to see what would happen. After a few minutes, same thing. Will have to try it with FF 1.5.0.7 sometime. [Link]

All my important ones work, so I'm happy, but be warned, most don't. However i do think they will be updated soon (the plug-ins). As for upgrading, I would say yes, only because I have experienced nothing but greatness from it (seems faster, built in spell checker and nice tab management). I have not had one problem I couldn't fix (preferences) and I have not experienced problems like crashing and incompatability. I normally watch all the DP trailers, which are in QuickTime and I also see other trailers and such done in QuickTime as well. Maybe I'm lucky, I can't ever recall having any major problems with FireFox, any build at that, but for those reading - I would DEFIANTLY keep it up-to-date. "The universe is hostile, So impersonal. Initially, I was disappointed to see that two of my add-ons, Tab-x (allows individual tabs to be closed from their own "X") and Rite of Tongue (an automatic spell checker), aren't available for 2.0. After playing with 2.0 for a little while, I realized why. These functions have been incorporated into 2.0. Nice. Now they just need to get BBCode working. I immediately hit a problem when I tried to 'Open All in Tabs' one of my bookmarks folders and it crashed the browser. I had to go through disabling all the extensions until I found out where the problem was. Turned out the Menu Editor extension was doing the damage for some reason. Now it's disabled everything is fine. Just thought I should say for the sake of anyone else who might hit the same problem. [Link]

I couldn't find a way to shut that off in the regular 2.0 options, so I installed the Tabbrowser Preferences extension, which, among other things, lets you specify whether you want the X's on each tab, or just on the end of the tab bar, or nowhere. But then I noticed that that extension seemed to have altered the behavior of the auto-complete recent URL drop-down box in the address bar (clicking on one now only selected it and pasted it into the address bar; you had to hit the return key to actually go to that URL, unlike before). So I uninstalled Tabbrowser Preferences, which made the auto-complete feature go back to working properly, but get this: the tabs did not revert back to having X's on each one. And I see no way to turn them back on (not that I want to). Moral of the story is think twice about installing Tabbrowser Preferences; it appears to need more work. (I was using Tab Mix Plus, rather than Tabbrowser Preferences, in 1.7, but it is not, as of yet, compatible with 2.0.) [Link]
