Click to expand They do that now and have been for a long time while flying (piloting) private aircraft. In fact, it's much safer, since the airplane has an autopilot. Even the low tech stuff has a wing leveler and most can maintain a fixed course. It's the take-off and landing that requires skill and attention. With GPS, auto-pilots are taking over those tasks also. Nearly all the commercial and military aircraft can operate without any pilot input, except for setting in the the coordinates of the destination and taxiing. There has been more than one instance when a small singe engine plane took off, flew until it ran out of gas and landed without incident or damage. [Link]

Click to expand Yeah, but they're still operated by licensed pilots, which requires a fair amount of training, and they still have to obey the rules. You have to obey ATC, you have to follow procedures, or you don't fly (or someone gets killed). You can't even get many people to use turn signals on cars, at least not intelligently. [Link]

And most of the training and testing of commercial pilots is all about handling emergency situations. I had the entire electrical system fail once enroute to Orlando. Can't talk or listen to ATC when that happens. That's where this 'personal aircraft' dream really falls apart. Can't pull over to the side of the road when problems arise or thumb a ride when you run out of gas. [Link]
