What is your price range? So far, I've been thoroughly delighted with my Budd Plug from Clear Ecstasy (the toy that I just received for review). I've also been quite pleased with the customer service I've received from this company. The toy itself is very classy, very satisfying, and also very expensive (at least, for my budget). If you want something even more exotic, I'm really intrigued by the Clingon DP devices. If I were buying one for myself, I'd probably be inclined to get the one without the clit plate, so that I could more easily use it in tandem with a vibrator. That's just me, though.

This plug that I'm about to review is my first-ever glass toy, and I also own only one in acrylic. So I'm not 100% convinced I'm the best person to give advice on this. You might ask Tricia, as well. The toy that I still find most satisfying is my Blowfish butt plug. It is neither glass nor acrylic, however; it's a stainless steel and bronze design from the French artist Julian Snelling.
The Blowfish has several small advantages over my new Clear Ecstasy Budd Plug. The first is price. It costs about half as much.
The second is the temperature sensation provided by the material, which is something that really turns me on. Metal is a conductor, whereas glass is an insulator. When the metal first touches or enters the body, it feels very cold, since it's rapidly conducting heat away from the body. After insertion, however, the metal warms up within a matter of minutes and feels hot to the touch when removed. (Since internal body temperature is about 98.6ºF, whereas skin temperature is about 92ºF.) I've noticed that my glass toy does undergo a similar temperature change, but it's far more subtle. It's technically possible to cool or heat a glass toy before or after use; however, it takes time and preparation, because otherwise an overly rapid temperature shift might damage the toy.
A third factor is an important advantage to me, but might be less of a concern for your friend. I find that the diameter of the "extra large" Blowfish is something my body can now easily accomodate. (I can insert it anally without pain in half a minute or less. The Blowfish also provides enough stretch vaginally to feel good there; in fact, I now normally lube it with my natural vaginal secretions before the anal insertion.) The slightly larger diameter of my Budd (it's 1/8" wider), combined with the extra length (1-1/2" longer), means that I haven't yet been able to accomplish an insertion in less than five minutes. However, I wanted that extra challenge. Once it's in place, the Budd does provide a very satisfying and appropriate level of fullness.
On the other side of the equation, the primary advantage of the Budd Plugs is that they are unique, one-of-a-kind toys. The manufacturer was happy to make mine in a custom size (between beginner and intermediate—the range tends to be oriented toward size queens) and a custom color (cobalt). The Snelling stainless plugs are not nearly as individualized, though they are also very artistic. (Artistic enough that Crystal Rosebud made a major starring appearance in The Fashionistas as a prop for Belladonna.)
I don't know if this helps or only confuses the matter further. Although I give a slight edge to my Blowfish, the Budd is also an extremely excellent toy. I have no complaints so far.

FYI, I saw my gf on Wednesday and she tried out the new toy. I'm pleased to say it was a very enjoyable night for us both and she found the plug extremely comfortable.
