I am just guessing, but it would seem to me that a girl with star-power could make more money if she is free of any one studio. The plus for fans is they see the girl in a wider variety roles. You don't have to negotiate your do's and don't's and the money you get paid for before every single shooting. You get box covers. The company prevents you from being overshot. And if you're smart you get the chance to direct. As a free agent it's just the same as in any other business. If you succeed you can earn much more than a company employee.
