Perhaps the greatest problem with overly long sex scenes is that usually the actors don't stay in character (no, calling each other by their character names isn't staying in character). This is detrimental even in shorter scenes, so when present in a bout of fucking which lasts longer than ten minutes (which is already quite long), the ambiance of the film as a whole is hurt. Sure, one could argue that because it's "porn," that sort of thing doesn't matter. As far as I'm concerned, if you wanna make a good film, make sure all your elements work in making it as much of a quality piece of cinema as possible, "porn" or not. An option to watch the feature without the sex and an option to watch the short sex scenes wall-to-wall. And on a second disc all the sex scenes in extended versions. I'm glad we have this discussion and Jessica is participating. I want the sex to fit into the story. And I prefer to watch the performers to fuck in character. | Damfino New Member 3 Posts 7/09 | Posted - Jul 27 2009 : 12:08AM I been thinking that a story-driven feature ought to have two cuts on the DVD: One is the usual 'Feature Cut' or 'Director's Cut'. This is what we have now. It should be the best the director can do in telling the porno story. The second cut would be called the 'Masturbator's Cut.' It has only and all the unabridged sex scenes. The Masturbator's Cut can easily be longer than the Feature Cut since the scenes are unedited. Besides the obvious reason, the second reason is to protect the feature. What I've noticed is the same as what that NYT article says. The feature industry has shifted pretty dramatically away from story-driven to vignette. Vignette articulates best with the web-site delivery but the problem for me is that DVDs have become more like a alternate deliverly mechanism for a group of vignettes. I want to see the feature industry retake possession of the DVD as the medium for feature porn. Right now the current concept of 'feature' is getting damn close to 'masturbator's cut.' The main idea of having an official Masturbator's Cut is to give the feature enough protection so that it can be a true feature. If you had a separate Masturbator's cut, you could leave the feature as a feature. For me I've almost entirely switched to vignette web sites this year but I'd like to go back to DVD! I bought only one DVD all last year. What I especially miss is the indie style character-driven comedy. I emphasiaze: CHARACTEER-DRIVEN. I'll give one example. One of my favorites is 'All About Keri' starring Keri Sable. "All About Keri" was a homage to the indie flick 'Mistress' starring DiNero and Robert Wuhl. DiNero played a rich guy and Wuhl played an aspiring/failed young director. He gets financing from rich guys only if he agrees to cast each rich guy's mistress in the movie. 'Mistress' did the conventional thing: Each mistress is a Drama Queen and only added to Wuhl's headaches. 'Keri' brilliantly turns it upside-down. Keri is literally an 18 year old porn star but she is the only adult in the movie! The guys are both acting like children. She is the only one who has the maturity to pull the guys through it. A huge part of the sexiness comes from the character that she is able to create through the whole movie. A good character like that contributes hugely to the fantasy. The deal is, you can't understand her character at all just from watching only all the sex scenes in the picture; it is a 'larger' concept that comes from her performance as a whole. From the whole feature. so what I'm looking for some way to protect 'character-driven' as a unique product of the DVD medium. When feature guys go entirely vignette, we lose the character-driven aspect that used to be in some of the story-driven pornos. --Damfino [Link] |

Just throw money at something and people will think it's "good." Of course, that's true of a lot of Hollywood garbage too. So 2040 really, really wants to be a good movie. It really tries to be a good movie, but there's something so stupid and contrived about it and, despite its seemingly noble intentions, is still only a very noble failure. Before I explain what I didn't like, I must really compliment Marcus London for his genuinely riveting performance. His acting is terrific and [unfortunately] makes the really awful acting on the parts of most everyone else in the movie really stand out. I also found the premise rather intriguing, though it wasn't as fleshed out as it could have and should have been. Now, what I disliked. First, the cinematography, while certainly looking much more polished than your average fuck-film, but it still has a really cheap feeling about it, due mostly to the piss poor lighting and awful flat video look. In fact, my biggest problem with the movie as a whole is how cheap everything looks. From the plastic looking "robots" and "futuristic" devices to the fact that characters are often shown in big empty rooms, to the almost complete absence of exteriors, the entire production feels like it's trying to look big budget but actually only cost a few grand. That said, I give a lot of credit to director Jonathan Morgan for actually seeming like he wanted to create a worthwhile movie, even though the results were far from great. And...Since I somehow forgot to mention it, this 3 hour movie has just over 2 hours of sex...Yikes! Edited by - john lyons on 10/9/2009 3:41:21 AM [Link] |
