May sound weird but what Jules is saying may well be true, although I also see what you're saying. If a shot is taken with a wide depth of field then things in the foreground and background may seem sharp, whereas if you adjust the camera settings for a smaller depth of field the foreground or the back ground may appear less sharp. I suspect that the marks that you think have been edited out are simply as a result of them being a bit blurred and out of focus or even in brighter light which can 'wash out' detail. You can also get similar effects using filters on the actual camera.
