not always, but sometimes when I go to launch something, it makes the machine grind to a virtual halt. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions. I haven't yet tried any other players.

Why don't you just use the one that comes with the divx codec from divx.com? Or the VLC Media Player?

I use something called Real Alternative. I got it because it plays RealPlayer files...and just about everything else. It plays Divx as long as the codec is installed. I like it because it doesn't seem to choke the system as much as some others.
Google real alternative or media player classic.
