Specifically I want to use a Visa (or could be a Discover) gift credit card for the monthly plan at XrentDVD - would this work? This is a $50 or whatever amount that you can purchase in store.
I need to hide extra porn rentals from the main credit card - if you what I mean. Don't laugh.

If it has the same numbers, an expiration date, and that three digit number on the back there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

Yes it will work. I have used a Visa gift card at XRent.

It worked but I had to enter in the billing address that correctly matched the gift card (it was sent to the person that originally gave me the gift card) and then it worked fine. I think it ended up doing 2 preauthorizations in there...

from my exp. you have to call the card company and register a billing address for the card if you want to do transactions without the card.
they also don't work at gas stations.

I think the odds are 50/50 that Xrent sends the porn to Grandma HeyNow, or whoever gave him the gift card.
