Hi, I need a way to get my guitar straight into my laptop with micing the amp with a crappy cpu mic.

I bought an adapter for the 1/4" cable so that it will fit into the mic jack of my laptop but the sound is mono and not stereo like it should be.

Anybody know if you can get this type of adapter that will work in stereo? Or any other way to jack straight in to my laptop?

What are you using to record or listen to the guitar? I think what you are looking for is a mono/stereo switch somewhere in the software.

I'm using SONY acid pro 5.

Thanks for the suggestions, I checked amazon, unfortunately I don't see an input for a 1/4" music cable.

I have seen something similar called an interface that you could install in your desktop, and this had the3/4" cable inputs. It was very similar to installing firewire inputs, but it had 1/4" inputs.

Don't see many interfaces anymore either.

When I first tried it I used a cpu mic and miced my amp. It was in stereo but I wanted to plug right into my laptop for better quality.

I bought an adapter that adapted my music cable to fit into the much smaller mic jack of my laptop. When I recorded it stated that it was in mono, and was only coming from the left side.

I think that the adapter must have only adapted in mono.

Thanks Hardware, thats almost the exact type of thimg I am looking for.

I was going to order it but then realized, damn, damn, damn it! I have a new Dell inspiron 1300. And Dell does not have a regular cardbus slot, dell has to have something called an "Expresscard slot" and will not fit any regular cardbus.

Thanks though, thats what I am looking for if I had almost any other laptop.

OK, I misunderstood what you are doing. No what you want is a 1/4" to USB cable. Specifically designed for a guitar or keyboard. I saw one at Target I see if I can find a link.

I'd go with a USB mixing board. I've got a Yamaha MW10 and it's very handy for adapting all kinds of sound sources and getting them into a PC. I'm sure there are cheaper solutions but this would be the most flexible.

1/4" jacks come in both mono and stereo flavors. Stereo 1/4" jacks are typically referred to as "TRS" I believe.

It could conceivably work but I think you're going to need a DI box or a mixer to make it sound right.

I'm just curious what guitar you're using that is wired for stereo?

I have a bass that wired in stereo and it can make some neat sounds.
