I’ll bet there’s sensitive data on the computer, too. Not too bright. Fortunately, you should be able to get things running smoothly. I would start with a program like CCleaner. I have a link to this free program on my site. It will clean up temporary files, log files and Web browser caches. It will also clean up the registry. Just be sure to back up the registry first. There’s also a good chance there’s spyware on the machine. I would download a couple of anti-spyware programs and scan the computer. I recommend Windows Defender, Spybot-Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. You’ll find download links on my site. If you continue to have problems with the computer, there’s one final solution. Reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. This will wipe out all the nasties that have gotten into Windows." She recommended using "a couple of anti-spyware programs"--do you need more than one? Save what you need to, wipe the harddrive clean, and begin anew. It's worth the effort. [Link] |

But if you use a condom AND a diaphram, you're about as close to 100% as you an get, because sperm has to beat BOTH barriers, not just one. The problem, of course, is money. I use AVG (free). I should probably use another virus scanner but I don't want to pay the subscription fees. I use AdAware (free), but I don't want to buy Spybot too. I already feel like I'm being nickel and dimed to death as it is. [Link] |

Personally, top-rated CounterSpy is well-worth it's modest $19.95 cost. I also have/use AVG Anti-Virus (both the paid version and the free version on different computers). Remember, anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware are two different products... both are needed. Personally, I use a six-layered approach to protecting my computers: CounterSpy for anti-spyware/adware AVG Anti-Virus for anti-virus CCleaner for clearing out unwanted crap and controlling cookies Spybot in order to take advantage of its "Immunize" feature that blocks known bad addresses from being executed Any decent software firewall (don't rely on what comes with Windows!) A router (which acts as a de-facto hardware firewall) Finally, you can (should) only be running one anti-virus application for best results. You can (and I do) run more than one anti-spyware/adware application. In my case, CounterSpy is my always running application. I manually run Spybot as desired. CCleaner is not an anti-virus, anti-spyware/adware program. You use it to keep the "crap" from building-up on your computer. Very useful! [Link] |

Get a top-rated anti-virus program like AVG, and don't worry about it missing things others might catch. [Link] |
