Can anyone tell me how to make Gifs? I've been told Photoshop can make Gifs, is this right? If so how? I've looked but I can't seem to see a function for it.

Try this (I am using Photoshop CS2, but it should be similar for most recent versions):

  • Open the picture you want to use as a GIF

  • Make sure you are in 24 bit or lower colour space. There should be text at the top of the window showing the colour space and bits-per-channel; it should be like "RGB/8"

  • If you are in a different colour space and/or more bits ber channel, change the image mode (Image menu, Mode submenu)

  • Choose File menu, Save As

  • In the File Format combo box, choose the option "CompuServe GIF"


If you want to draw a GIF from scratch I would suggest using a painting/drawing program to build the image.

I'm on CS2 as well, so that helps a lot. Right, done what you said. Now, how do you get a moving image outa that? I'm guessing you have to somehow connect other similar images to it, the more the better, especially if you want it to run smoothly like one of those movie shorts I've seen on people's avaters?

In the older versions of Adobe's software Image Ready was the program to use for creating GIFs.

In ImageReady, probably photoshop too:
Window > Show Animation
That'll bring up the animation menu. You can add frames from there.

Ahh, I see. When I click on the "Animation" option (I've never used the "Window" function before) I get a small strip at the bottom of the screen, and when I drag and drop an image there it shows up like a cell from a movie. My guess is that if I add more pics in the strip it'll join them together into a moving image, right? Then all I have to do is save it as a Gif and Bingo! Thanks.

Thanks for that tutorial. I've been curious about the animated Gif thing for some time. Now all I have to do is figure out how to add an mp3 to it........
