S1 E5 : Strange Nurses w/ Casey Calvert , Sarah Vandella & Whitney Wright
The episode opens with Whitney Wright { Tiffany } waking up in a hospital bed. Nurse Casey Calvert {Amy} enters and says that she’s here to help Whitney remove her bandages off. Whitney has just had a nose job and so she’s dealing with some bruising that Casey helps her cover up with makeup.
After the title screen we see Whitney listening to her Walkman when Casey visits again , bringing her some candy at lunchtime. Casey wants to know what Whitney’s friends will think when she goes back to school. Whitney says that she graduated last year so who cares what those people think. Whitney’s mom wants her to go to college soon but Whitney dreams of going to California and acting. Casey agrees that would be super cool. She gets called away to the nurses station. Whitney reminds Casey to come back and talk later.
Some time later Whitney is visited by the surgeon Ryan Keely, who wants to get a little flirty and check out her work. She gets up close and removes the tape from Whitney’s nose. This one is definitely more risqué than the others so far in the first season for me. I can’t say I’m fully on board with the sex being pressed onto Whitney’s character in this way. It depicts a kind of begrudging half consent that has been a rather hot topic in the GW forum over the last week or so. It’s surely a grey area because you have the verbal agreement - but also there is Whitney’s reluctance that at times boarders on fear.
Now in one sense this feeling is carried by strong acting by the ladies , that is at once commendable in its performance - so for a critic that skews away from coercion but always loves to see challenging character portrayals it’s even harder to figure out. Personally, I do wonder if we could have gotten to the sex via a different avenue, and if so, what would be lost from the scene?
With the title ‘Strange Nurses’ there could have been a less creepy way to go. Even if you’d have started with the exact same overture from Sarah wanting to unexpectedly sniff Whitney there could have been an explicit way to show Whitney as enjoying the weird advance. It’s just one of those creative choices that skirts the line for a lot of viewers.
Whitney did a great job selling her character’s conflict and that at least isn’t up for debate. Casey’s turn was more subtle and also well acted so that she actually feels perhaps more sinister than Sarah who we only see as an aggressor.
All that said , the sex here was shot as good as any of the previous Girlcore episodes to in my opinion. We got a good number of close up cunnilingus shots which are always a prized commodity in girl girl. I also loved Sarah’s energy in pussy eating which I realize could seem contradictory, but still remains true.
I have to say also that for a smaller bed as a location it still worked to accommodate three stars.
As much as I do struggle with some elements of this , the story was well told from a writers point of view too. I actually love the idea of a night nurses breaking rules. This is without a doubt the best use of the hospital set on Girlsway so far. It also doesn’t hurt that I was bedridden for nearly the last week with virus so some part in my brain maybe got an extra jolt imaging naughty nurses.
This brings up another interesting facet to the scene and how it connects with Girlcore part of a whole. We have had now scenes that tackled a lot of familiar themes that might be considered formative to a broader picture of sexual psyche. Is this all intentional thing that Bree Mills set out to tie into nostalgia?
Nurses are not only popular in porn because of the skimpy clothes , but nurses can be easily sexualized because they are seen as caregivers and hospitals are also places where we feel vulnerable. Maybe again I read a lot into simple things , but as someone who grew up disabled and spent a lot of time in hospitals I know acutely that nurses or doctors are often the first non familial relationships we have where people see us naked and needy and their very purpose is to make us feel better.
I will definitely try to wrap all of my thematic takeaways up in the finale - but for now I think it’s fair to say that this episode was among the most thought provoking and interesting to review.
