Using the view numbers I compiled about half a year ago on all the g/g videos produced by Adult Time from 2014 to 2023 (so the data is accurate as of 6 months ago), here are the results of my analysis.
First, here are the breakdown of scene types every year.
As you can see, every year most scenes (a bit less than 80%) are "duo" or one on one scenes. Most of the rest (a bit less than 20%) are threesome scenes. Very few are "orgy" scenes, or scenes with 4 women or more. During these 10 years, 2022 was the high watermark of orgy scenes at 10% of all scenes.
But are they popular with the audience? Here I calculate the average views of these three types of scenes (again, the numbers are accurate as of middle of 2024).
With the exception of 2014, the same pattern prevails every year: orgies > threesomes > one-on-one scenes. The audience does love spectacle. The high point of lesbian orgies came in 2018, driven in large part by the most popular orgy on Adult Time (in terms of views), an 8-women extravaganza, part of the Girlcore series, starring Carter Cruise, Abigail Mac, Scarlett Sage, Kira Noir, Vienna Rose, Ryan Keely, Liv Revamped, and Katya Rodriguez. It's the 8th most viewed scene over the whole 10 year period.
But are they actually worth it? From the point of the producers, they are surely more costly to make. Do the extra views justify the extra cost? I will only consider the pay for the performers. No doubt scenes with large cast have even more expenses -- for example, at the very least, I assume they have to hire more makeup artists for orgies. But for the sake of simplicity, I will ignore all that.
Now how much do the women get paid? I've posted the table below in another thread, but I'll post it below again just for clarity. It's from the book "Porn Work: Sex, Labor, and Late Capitalism" by Heather Berg, published in 2021.
The $600-$800 figure is presumably for a one-on-one g/g scene. I will use $800 for simplicity, and assume the same $800 apply in threesomes or scenes with more women. That is to say, a duo scene costs $1600, a threesome scene costs $2400, and so on. I then divide the number of views by the performer costs, which shows for each dollar spent on performers, how many views are generated.
The result is pretty much what I suspected: more women = more popular, but not popular enough. In every year, duo scenes generate the most views for every dollar spent. In all but two years, threesome scenes generate more views than orgies for every dollar spent.
Now, most "orgies" on Adult Time are foursomes. Scenes with five or more women are very rare.
About 9 in 10 orgy scenes are foursomes.
If we further break down orgies between these two types, does the "diminishing return" result still hold? In a word, yes. There are so few scenes that have five or more women that it's not possible to do a year by year analysis like above, so here are the results when I group all scenes together across the whole 10 years.
On a per-dollar basis, one-on-one scenes generate almost twice as many views as "true" orgies (that is, scenes with five women or more, if we want to define them that way).
So why does Adult Time produce so many threesomes and scenes with even more women? Why not do one-on-one scenes exclusively? This is pretty much what every other site does. Girlfriends Films, Viv Thomas, Slayed, All Her Luv, Sweetheart Video ... these sites produce far fewer threesomes, let alone orgy scenes.
It's something of a mystery. What do you guys think?
^I guess, at least in the case of Adulttime, that is because Bree Mills likes orgies. Many of the most prominent scenes of that site were directed by her, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are just made because she wants to do one. In the other hand, maybe doing orgy scenes is a way for the company to hightlight from others, like saying "hey, we do scenes with many hot women having sex". Maybe that's a strategy to attract the attention of the viewer.
Yeah maybe it's just a matter of trying to create a "signature style" for the website. That's really the only thing I can think of too. It's a very expensive way of doing so, but I guess we should always be thankful when someone is willing to create different things. Even if it's not to my personal taste, some people like it.
Just want to give a shout out to Lez be bad. It's way better than I thought it'd be (especially for being a quasi Hot and mean). It's strapon/toy heavy, but still doesn't feel as bad as HAM was.

This is a one-of-a-kind scene, and I hope they never do it again because it feels like a waste of two incredible performers like Chloe and Octavia.

Imo, there are 3 key ways to ruin a great pairing. The first of course is just a strange plot or scenario like this scene. The second is having 3 girls where 2 would have sufficed. Two scenes come to mind for me. One has Eva Lovia, Celeste Star, and Malena Morgan. To me, the parts focused more so on Eva are just "meh," but whenever Celeste and Malena are focused on each other, it's some of the hottest eating I've ever seen. By the end of it, it's like Eva is just there as something/someone for Celeste to grab onto as Malena devours her. I'm pretty sure Celeste came for real there.

The third way to ruin a good pairing is to put them in a bad setting like a shower or tub. Too bad they didn't start at the tub and transition to the bed like Malena, Lily, and Alyssa did.
