However, there was a time when San Francisco was also a center for porn production. Can anyone think of any Golden Age porn films where San Francisco visibly appears as a location? [Link] |

I've worked and lived in a number of cities, New York, Austin, Seattle and now San Francisco. Film is one of my main interests and one of my pet obsessions in how filmmakers incorporate landscape into their films. San Francisco is, of course, one of the most famous film locations in the world. It's also a very atmospheric place that makes you feel like you're in a movie. I commute from Pacific Heights to the Financial District and, most every day, pass by the Brocklebank Apartments, where Madeleine Elster lived in Vertigo. If you're a fan of that movie, as I am, it gives you a little kick everytime you see it. There are a lot of other places like that in the city. I mean, in some fictive universe, I could list Frank Bullitt, Harry Callahan and Adrian Monk as my neighbors. Catherine Trammell also lives nearby. Now there's a woman you wouldn't mind running into. Or not. Actually Sharon Stone's character was inspired by Danielle Steel, who does live near me. So this is a city very much steeped in film lore. There's a terrific book, Celluloid San Francisco, that discusses many of the locations used in many of the films shot here, but only mentions 'legit' films and doesn't discuss porn or grindhouse fare. What I'd like to do is watch some of the films listed above and write a little piece, discussing the use of the city as a location in them. It'll take me a while to do it, so don't expect to see anything soon, but I'd be happy to post a link to it or just post the text here. Thanks again, everyone! [Link] |

I would say that out of my list, V is the best bet. It has great views of Market St., the mission, the Embarcadero, etc and it's also a really good movie. Baby Rosemary and the DeRenzy titles are also very good for North Beach/Tenderloin footage (and are also really good movies). In many cases, although it was not illegal to shoot hardcore in S.F., west coast filmmakers would try to use nondescript locations to avoid anyone recognizing where their films were actually shot. In many cases, LA based filmmakers would shoot all the narrative elements of the films in Hollywood and then trek up to S.F. to shoot the sex parts. Paolo Coeli's cinematography is really what makes it (you have to love his steadicam shots) as the story is pretty fluffy. That said, it's still damn good viewing; perfect for a quiet rainy night. If you're in a Herman mood, Shaun's More Than Sisters and Waterpower are chock full of Bernard favorites (mostly Sisters and Vertigo). [Link] |

The ending is outstanding, I think one of the best ever in an X rated film. V is also full of so many subtle character building touches such as Annette briefly flashing the movers. Again, it's not my favorite Graver film but it's certainly a near masterpiece. Continuing on the original purpose of this thread, there were quite a number of gay films shot around S.F. as well. The best examples I can think of off hand are Toby Ross' first four features as well as Arthur Bressan Jr.'s Passing Strangers which has some nice shots of the tenderloin and mission districts. His XXX films range from admittedly bad to some of the best ever made. If you haven't seen many of his X films, some of the best are 3 A.M., The Ecstasy Girls, Hot Rackets, Garage Girls, Coed Fever, Amanda By Night, Society Affairs, Trinity Brown, and Dollface. He also directed most of the 1979 suspense sleeper, The Attic with Ray Milland and Carrie Snodgress and the totally over the top drug/hippie movie The Hard Road.
